Katy Perry says she has kissed a girl - but insists she isn't a lesbian.

Perry, 23, sings the lyrics "I kissed a girl and I liked it" in her smash hit single I Kissed a Girl -- but she is certain that women aren't to her taste, and she is happy with her boyfriend.

She says, "I have kissed a girl, but I'm not a lesbian. I have a boyfriend. I just didn't want to sing another typical relationship song. Nobody told me to sing the song.

"It wasn't done for anyone else's satisfaction. People have sung about all sorts of things in pop. Look at Prince and Madonna."

Kissing this girl is probably the last thing on Katy Perry's mind as she lies face down in the hay during a drink-fuelled girl-on-girl wrestling match.

But the "I Kissed a Girl" singer certainly seemed to like getting physical with the sexy brunette during a 10-minute wrestling match in a field at a wild festival after party.

The photograph was taken in the U.S. last month - and it proves the singing sensation knows how to let her hair down.

Katy only stopped the 'fight' when her rocker boyfriend Travis McCoy stepped in and dragged her away.

Her pert rear was on show for all to see in a trademark skimpy outfit as Gym Class Heroes star Travis carried her off over his shoulder.

Fellow revellers told how Katy 'dominated' the impromptu tussle with her brunette opponent, who was her merchandising girl on the Warped Tour music festival in the U.S. last month.

But perhaps it is a good idea that the 23-year-old star doesn't give up the day job - because her rival seems to have got the better of her as she sat astride Katy with her face pushed into the hay.

'Crowds go crazy but I'm like: Chill out! It's just me

SHE is the latest girl sensation to pirouette to chart-topping heights.

But Katy Perry has also managed to pioneer her own brand of tongue-in-cheek, candy-coated power pop.

Her risqué lyrics on songs such as I Kissed A Girl and Ur So Gay have fuelled controversy, admiration — and success.

New album One Of The Boys gives an insight into her world of frustrating relationships and youthful spontaneity.

Her meteoric rise to fame is the result of an extended battle for creative control. Here the Californian tells POPPY COSYNS just how she managed it:

HOW are you finding your sudden rise to fame?

I feel like I’ve been on tour since it’s been happening, which is awesome. I get to see the crowds grow and people get more excited. One girl fainted. It was crazy. I was like, “chill out! It’s just me!”

This morning I was in Milan and a couple of mornings before that I was in Germany and London and Paris, I’m zig-zagging all over Europe. Then, for like 17 days, I’m in Australia, New Mexico and Japan.

It’s incredibly hectic but there are no complaints. The perks are f***ing amazing and I’m doing what I always wanted to do.

I’m gonna be playing on Jools Holland tonight and then I’ll have like an hour-and-a-half of downtime, I just wanna go out and bop around.

What did you make of the controversy over I Kissed A Girl?

I think everybody has an opinion about this type of stuff and I try and remind them that, if they have watched pop music in its entirety, since it was created by Elvis basically, it shows all kinds of walking the fine line.


Elvis was the devil and then he became the King, Madonna has done it and she’s the Queen, even Kings Of Leon, Sex On Fire.

It took five years to make your album, why the delay?

For so many years the timing wasn’t right. Thank God it didn’t come out then, I wouldn’t have been mentally prepared. You have to be a tough animal to be yourself and have an untarnished perspective.

For a long time, the record industry wanted people to be like certain other people and I didn’t want to be like anyone else.

How did you discover music and who were your idols?

Singing in church influenced me, my gospel foundation was a huge influence in broadening the range of my voice but I started to get more intensely influenced at 15, 16 and 17 by Queen and The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds album and Jagged Little Pill (Alanis Morrisette) and Tragic Kingdom (No Doubt). A lot of the artists had really strong female perspectives.

your songs based on your life?

I can almost give you a person that they’re about, not that I should! I have different ex-boyfriends represented and friends and bits of my life are all as an open book.

So what can you tell us about the album track Waking Up In Vegas?

Vegas gives me that “what the f*** feeling”. It’s really close to LA so one night you could be having a beer with your friends and, when you wake up, you’re in Vegas.

Who make up your fanbase?

I thought it would be girls my age and girls a little bit younger but I found people coming to the shows and some of them being like, “This is my guilty pleasure!”.

It’s cute that people of all kinds and ages are singing along.

How did you find it working with a top-notch team of co-writers?

There was a fantastic balance because I didn’t want to work with people who didn’t respect my vision.

I worked with Greg Wells who did a lot of the Mika record and I would walk into that studio and say “I know we’re working on a fast song but I really wanna do a ballad!”

And he would always try it with me and I felt so confident. He got the best out of me I think.

How did you choose the track order?

That took weeks. Ultimately, I wanted to end it with Fingerprints, which is basically a way of leaving my mark.

I was very particular in the process. I’m a particular girl.
How did you find the VMAs?

Gosh, it was like a blink and it was over. It was awesome. I mean this is a TV show that I would sneak away to my friend’s house to watch. To think they would even give me a good seat was like “come on!”.

What did you think of host Russell Brand?

He’s hot in person. I appreciate his kind of f***ed-up sense of humour, he’s hilarious.

What are your plans for the future?

Hot N Cold, the next single, is going crazy in the States right now, it’s everywhere.

I’m just so happy with it because it represents a broader perspective of who I am, not just the cute, sexy little kitten Katy.

Then next year I’ll be doing more of my own shows and I just wanna keep everybody on the edge of their seat and wondering “what’s she gonna do next?”

Has that outlook been the key to your success?

I think the key to my success is never giving up. Hard work pays off. If you work hard enough, you’ll have a chance.

You may not hit a home run but you always have a chance to step up to the plate and try, and I just stuck with it for so long. Just stick with it.

Everybody says you have one life to live, live it to your fullest — and that’s exactly what I’m gonna do.

Caught Live: Katy Perry
KATY PERRY propelled herself onto the stage last night with so much girl power gusto that the photographers in the front row thought she’d descended on them from the ceiling.

As she emerged in a rhythmic whirl of arms, legs and hair thrashing, the crowd went wild for the quirky songstress who has taken the charts by storm.
Considering the intimate venue, the sheer volume of screams was immense from the predominately female audience.
The sell-out gig at London’s Scala in Kings Cross was jam-packed with an eclectic mix of giddy sixth formers, wide-eyed Freshers, ice cool indie kids and feisty lesbians, all hungry for a glimpse of the girl who tasted another girl’s ‘cherry Chapstick’.
And it didn’t take me long to figure out why.
There was something utterly mesmerising about this 23-year-old California girl.
Dressed in a short, strappy navy dress and flower print tights, the singer looked undisputedly cute and innocent.
But all that changed the moment she said hello and cheekily rearranged her breasts.
Katy didn’t waste time getting started and thrilled everyone with a steady stream of energetic performances from her album One of the Boys.
She repeatedly teased the captivated sea of faces with one-liners about women and their inadequate counterparts before launching into a rendition of Ur So Gay.
Before launching into Waking Up in Vegas, she quipped: “I’d love to take you all home with me, but I’m not sure my suitcase would fit you.”
She provocatively danced with each of her band members and at one point jumped up onto the speakers before flashing her knickers to the snappers shouting: “There, now you’ve got your picture!”
At one point, she even reached into the crowd and stole a giant pair of sunglasses and continued to sing as she danced around with them on.
But what Katy lacks in experience, she makes up for in style, wit, intelligence and blend of PINK meets ALANIS MORRISETTE with a sprinkling of GWEN STEFANI.
After Hot N Cold, she paused for a moment before saying: “I know I talk a lot of c**p... But there’s one thing I would like you all to know. I did once kiss a girl. Yes, I did. And do you know what? I touched her boobies too!”
And with that, she launched into I Kissed A Girl, sending the audience into a head thrashing, body-popping frenzy.
