Q: Which executives at the record label came up with the idea to put you on a soap opera?
A: You know what? It wasn’t their idea. It was a friend of mine who’s helping give the show more edge. At first I was like, “Nah.” And then the next week Snoop Dogg was on “As the World Turns.” So I said, “Let’s do it!” Snoop Dogg is my standard for everything in life.
Q: You must smoke an insane amount of pot.
A: Not anymore. I want to kill myself every time I do it. I think Snoop is just gangsta. He’s not my role model, just my role model to do something new.
Q: Is “I Kissed a Girl” based on a real experience?
A: All of my songs are kind of like chapters from my brutally honest diary of my life. With that song, I was reading a magazine and opened it up to a picture of either Scarlett Johansson or Megan Fox, and I turned to my boyfriend and said, “You know, if they walked through the door and asked me to pucker up, I would just do it.”
Q: He must have been so bummed.
A: He was.
Q: Is this the same guy from “Ur So Gay?”
A: Yeah, right.
Q: Do you always date guys who steal your makeup and jeans?
A: I date these very metro-sexual guys. I love that they’re very emotional and communicative, but sometimes it’s like, “Dude, I need my flatiron back, and you’ve used all my eyeliner.”
Q: Would you ever hook up with an ugly guy?
A: Yeah, sure. I fall in love with the type of person. If they’re a douche bag, I don’t care if they look like David Beckham. Katy Perry Is Funny!
Pop songs with Perry cast as a sunnier Avril. The Next Big Thing! Katy Perry This pastor’s daughter says she has done bad things. What kind of things? By Nick Duerden Blender, October 2004
“I’m completely outrageous and I’ll do anything for attention!” No, not the words of Paris Hilton, but the claim of a pastor’s daughter.
“Music wasn’t allowed in the house because it’s the devil’s work,” says Katy Perry, a vocalist with the production team The Matrix. “And if I brought home friends, my mom wanted to know if they were Christians.” Here, she laughs wildly as if someone, somewhere, just cracked a joke. “That’s my parents. They’re crazy! They’re nuts!”
Perry, now 19, was born in Santa Barbara, and like Beyoncé, got her first taste of performance singing in church. Unlike Beyoncé, she spent her adolescence not being “your typical Christian,” she says with a wicked laugh. “I’ve done a lot of bad things. Use your imagination.”
After years singing locally, she came to the attention of The Matrix — the brain trust behind Avril Lavigne and Ricky Martin — who were assembling a group that now features Perry and the British-born singer AKA. Their debut is a radio-friendly pop collection with Perry cast as a sunnier Avril.
“At first, I thought, ‘Crap! There goes my credibility!’ They’ve worked with some brilliant people, but also people who are hardly artists at all,” she says. “But if people buy the record, that’s all the credibility I need.”
She’s working on her solo debut (due 2005) with Morissette producer Glen Ballard. “My album will be more rock, which is probably why my parents think I’m going to hell!”
Katy Perry’s Parents Aren’t Impressed, and Homosexuals Hate Her Too
Katy Perry once kissed a girl and she liked it, if her personal reports are to be believed. Though when we have a confession to make we don’t normally make a literal song and dance about it, we can accept that this is the modern age and those youngsters do things differently. But according to some sources, Katy Perry’s parents don’t see it that way, and have registered their disgust at their daughter’s activities and apparent sexual escapades.
Then we find out that Katy thinks her parents were misquoted, and that they are fully supportive of her career. But which is it, Katy - which is it?! Are you a libertine whose parents don’t like you? Are you a mental and a Christian (peas in a pod) who likes the lesbians and has supportive parents?
We need to know.
But it’s all gone and turned into a big pile of confusion, with reports and counter-reports flying in left, right and centre. If we were cynical, we might assume this was the work of some marketing twit who was out to make a bit of a splash with the Perry name.
But of course, we’re not that cynical.
Reports that Katy Perry’s parents hate what she does came about from the greatest newspaper in the world, the Daily Mail, which in between saying videogames cause all the ills in the world ever, managed to fit some other words in. Namely, Katy’s mum saying:
“Katy knows how I feel. We are a very outspoken family and she knows how disappointed her father and I are. I can’t even listen to that song. The first time I heard it I was in total shock. When it comes on the radio I bow my head and pray. I hate the song. It clearly promotes homosexuality and its message is shameful and disgusting.”
Now we understand it’s a bad song, but is there any real need to get God involved in matters? We mean, he might use his ultra-powers to blow up the radio or something, but you could just forget about bothering him, turn the radio off and go do something else. He probably has enough to worry about, the poor little blighter.
Katy’s mama went on - probably while between bouts of praying for God to change channel on her TV:
“Katy was raised in a very strict Christian household, she started performing in church at nine. She was a special child; she loved to sing and had an angelic voice. That is why this is all so disappointing and sad.”
It must be terribly disappointing to have a daughter who is a worldwide star - really quite bad. But mummy wasn’t finished there, and she went on with even more words falling out of her gob:
“Katy is not a homosexual but I fear she has been led astray by the Hollywood crowd. Katy was spotted by a music producer, who invited her to L.A. That’s when she started to change. I was worried she’d start doing drugs and drinking alcohol. I still am. I spoke to her only recently. She said, ‘Oh Mom, I’m not going to turn into Amy Winehouse.’”
We do think if Perry were to turn into Winehouse MKII that would be enough to test anybody’s faith, regardless of how devout they were. As we all know, Amy Winehouse is proof there is no God.
But Katy Perry wasn’t about to sit still listening to mother dearest’s apparent rampant claims, and quickly jumped to the defence of her parents. In an interview with MTV, Perry used some words - in a similar way to how her mother did:
“I’m sure they opt out of singing ‘I Kissed a Girl’ or ‘Ur So Gay’, but they’re singing along to every other song on the record. They’re just glad I’m not strung out, doing centrefolds and s**t like that.”
They’re probably not going to be made that much prouder by you swearing now, are they? Oh well, at least that clears that one up. A bit.
But what about the claims that Katy’s track UR So Gay is homophobic and I Kissed a Girl is patronising to the gay community?
Well, what better way to win over fans than to make a sweeping generalisation, in which you assert that all people of a certain sexual preference have exactly the same personalities? There isn’t a better way, it would seem, with Perry stating:
“I think gay people have a wonderful sense of humour.”
Katy Perry vacationed with her boyfriend Travis McCord in Mexico for Christmas and made quite the scene when he had to leave on Christmas morning. Katy and Travis have been playing a should-we-or shouldn’t-we engagement game, and judging from a recent news item, it appears Katy may be a lot to handle as a girlfriend.
more juice after the jump…
A spy from Page Six called into the column saying Katy acted like a spoiled child on Christmas morning:
'The girl-smooching rocker was spotted sobbing outside Cabo’s ME hotel on Christmas morning while parting from her boyfriend, Travis McCoy, who was leaving to go back on tour with his band, Gym Class Heroes. “She was crying and kissing him and wailing, ‘Don’t go!’ ” said our spy. “Her parents had to pull her away.” '
Ugh. Nobody likes a needy girlfriend, Katy. This is no way to get that ring you’ve been praying for.
Katy Perry - Gridlock New Year’s Eve Party in Los Angeles
Stepping out for hosting duties, Katy Perry was all smiles at the “Gridlock New Year’s Eve” party at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles last night (December 31).
Showing off a sexy look for the evening, Miss Perry arrived to the holiday shindig sporting a provocatively unbuttoned corset dress with patterned black tights.
After posing for lined-up photogs, the 24-year-old “I Kissed A Girl” singer headed into the party to mingle with fellow guests including Seth MacFarlane, Zelda Robinson and Pamela Hasselhoff.
During the course of the night, revelers cheered as they raised a star at midnight, rather than the traditional raising of the ball.
Katy Perry surprised us with a wide smile and a very Madonna circa mid-'80s dress last night at Paramount Studios. From someone who loves her kicky sense of style (and all the surprises), I do hope that this isn't a permanent makeover. Shudder!
Katy is pictured here posing on the red carpet for the Gridlock New Year's Eve event in Los Angeles.

Katy Perry shows off some show stopping showgirl style...
Who had even heard of Katy Perry - or thought about the taste of cherry chapstick - 12 months back? Well, 2008 was without a doubt the singer's year in the end, so it was fitting that she saw 2009 in with a bang.
Performing at Gridlock New Year party at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, the 24-year-old took inspiration from Kylie with her outlandish showgirl outfit - but no one would've been expecting anything demure from her; previous stage costumes have included everything from a black and yellow sequinned Barack Obama dress to a Manish Arora merry-go-round corset dress.
Her first world tour is coming up this year, so it will be easier for us all to keep our eye on her wardrobe.
