Uh-Oh, Katy Perry...Guess What The Matrix Found Up In The Attic?
Oooooh! Katy Perry's not gonna like this. Pop production team The Matrix (i.e., Lauren Christy, Graham Edwards and Scott Spock) crafted a string of hits in the early '00s—most notably Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" and "Sk8r Boi," Hilary Duff's "So Yesterday" and Liz Phair's "Why Can't I?"
And in 2004, the producers recorded their own album, with two unknown singers fronting them—a British guy named Adam Longlands and (dun, dun, DUNNNN) a 19-year-old Katy Perry.
The self-titled Matrix album never saw a release, but now apparently, for some odd reason—Oh, I don't know, what could it be?—the trio thought it was the perfect timing to put it out on their own label, Let's Hear It Records.
The CD is released on Tuesday. I listened to it yesterday, and it's not bad! Particularly, the tracks "Take A Walk" and "I Love You" stand out. And Adam Longlands, where are you now?
It does, however, sound like Katy was majorly aping Avril's singing style. And every song that comes on you start thinking, Oh, it's the same guitar intro from "So Yesterday"! No, wait...it's "Sk8r Boi"!
Anyway, here's the one music video that originally got made in 2004 to promote the scrapped project, for the song "Broken":
HAVING conquered the radio airwaves, American pop star of the moment, Katy Perry could turn her attention to the big screen.
Speaking exclusively to Insider, the I Kissed A Girl singer revealed she'd like to try her hand at acting.
"I'd like to be in something a little loose with room for improvisation in the funny department because I do think I can put my skills of hamming it up to work,'' Perry told Insider.
Before stardom, the 24-year-old dabbled with acting.
"Acting was always an aspiration when I moved to Los Angeles,'' she said.
"I studied for half a year, but music started to fill my every living moment so there has been no room to juggle. I think in the future it will take something very inspiring and challenging and complementary to bringing out another dimension of who I am, to push me to be involved.''
It's been a huge year for the quirky songstress, who became an overnight star off the back of her 2008 album, One Of The Boys.
The single, I Kissed A Girl, was a huge hit, going number one in 15 countries.
Perry quickly followed up with another outstanding pop track, Hot N Cold, which was equally successful.
"I'm still the same person, I just wake up each day knowing exactly what I am gonna do with my day,'' she said. ``I used to wake up with less purpose.''
To top the year off, Perry scored herself a Grammy nomination and will perform at the awards in LA on February 8.
She's nominated for best female pop performance against Pink, Adele, Leona Lewis, Sara Bareilles and Duffy.
"If by some way the heavens shine upon me that night, I'll let it be organic and from the heart, which is always more entertaining,'' said Perry, who will bring her Hello Katy Tour to Australia in August.
Perry's album One of the Boys is out now. Her fifth single, Thinking Of You, is available digitally.
Perry will host Bondi Blonde's Style Mansion Party in Los Angeles on February 9.
The boutique beer is sending nine competition winners to the party, accompanied by the local face of the brand, model Jaime Wright.
As I said back when I first wrote about this song last March, after her still-refuse-to-name-it first single, it was going to take something amazing to get me to like Katy Perry's music.
And "Hot 'n Cold" was that something.
The sound of Max Martin and Dr. Luke setting aside their straightforward pop-rock formula for a moment to create a song that bounced along with a fizzy pop energy and attitude-including lyrics that managed the amazing task of being both completely Katy Perry and not repellent--taking her persona and actually making it work for the song--"Hot 'n Cold" was so irresistibly fun that I couldn't help being drawn in by it. To be fair, it's not a full rejection of that Max/Luke pop-rock template, but more a refining of it, taking out most of the guitars, replacing them with electronic elements, and speeding everything up just a little bit. Jason Nevins-remixing the template, in other words. Or sharpening up the sound of Paris's "Nothing In This World," giving it a little bite. Whatever comparison you want to make, though, "Hot 'n Cold" still came across as fresh, a bit feisty, and, most importantly of all, fun.
Of course, then Katy had to go and release "I Kissed A Girl" and ruin everything.
Katy Perry was certainly hot in 2008. Her song "I Kissed A Girl" was seemingly everywhere and she quickly shook off any notions of being a one hit wonder with the follow up single "Hot 'n Cold."
Now Perry will try to parlay last year's successes into a hit 2009 tour. After kicking off this weekend in Seattle, here are the upcoming U.S. tour dates.

Beyond out on tour, you can also catch Katy on television February 8th on the Grammys when she participates in "My Grammy Moment", where one aspiring performer (selected by fan voting) will get to sing with her. Whoever wins, they should be sure to wear some cherry chapstick! Just in case...particularly since Perry now says her celibacy "vow" was just a joke.
Katy Perry ‘would rather die than abstain from sex’ Sunday, 25 January , 2009, 12:27
Popstar Katy Perry has laughed off reports suggesting that she’s planning a vow of celibacy for 2009.
Instead, the babe insisted that she would rather die than abstain from sex.
The singer, who split from Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy in December (08), had announced plans to remain celibate, saying "I''ve actually taken a vow of celibacy this year. No kissing anyone. Just my cat, Kitty Purry,” reports the Daily Express. However, now Katy stated that the comment was a joke and was not meant to be taken seriously. "I am not going to be celibate. That was a joke, and any fine journalist would have got that. Please, celibacy for the whole year? I'd rather die.?” Katy told People.com.

Katy Perry is delighted someone paid $3,500 for a mould of her breasts.
The 'I Kissed A Girl' singer had her ample assets immortalised in a plaster cast for breast cancer research charity Keep A Breast, and was thrilled with the amount someone paid for it.
She said: "Someone paid $3,500 for a mould of my breast. That's a lot in a recession."
Katy, 24, has also denied claims she suffered from alcoholism while waiting for her break in the music industry, and is adamant she is only a social drinker.
She said: "I didn't even know what rehab was until Amy Winehouse sang about it. I've tried things of course, but I've never been addicted. I've never had any problems."
The US star recently insisted she has no plans to end her war of words with Lily Allen, who previously claimed Katy called her "fat", saying: "When someone wants to go at it with me I'll come back with all guns blazing!"

Katy Perry has promised her first headlining world tour will be fruity.
The I Kissed A Girl singer is planning to indulge her passion for fruit in the set and costumes.
Katy told Billboard: "I have the guy who creates stages for Madonna working on this tour. I'm indulging my obsession with fruit and cats and designing all different outfits."
The 24-year-old singer hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards last year and appeared on top of a giant banana and a giant cherry.
Katy launched her tour in Seattle on Friday, she is detouring to appearing at the Grammys on February 8, before making an 11-date European run, including several UK performances, and then heading to Japan.
Katy, who made 12 costume changes into eccentric dresses at the MTV Awards, revealed she would love to design her own clothing line.
But she said: "It would take two years to do it right. I don't want to do something rushed and sloppy. I look at something like Gwen Stefani's line, L.A.M.B., and that took forever to do."
