Happy and Proud
Avril, who sold 30 million records worldwide so far, got one night of her last tour released as a DVD.The DVD ,which was recorded at the Toronto concert of The Best Damn Tour, remains as one of the best concert records ever.Avril answers questions about that DVD ,which we gifted our readers at our september issue, and a lot other stuff.
You immortalized The Best Damn Tour with a DVD.How do you feel about it?
I am so happy! The concert you watch in DVD was recorded at the Toronto concert and I'm proud of the job done.
Toronto is your home. When you were in front of crowd giving a concert there did you get excited?
There wasn't an excitement more than normal.I had the same amount of excitement I feel before every concert.I knew the concert would be good and the audience was great.During this tour my production crew worked really hard and they always did things that comforts me.
How much do you get involved in the production part of the tour?
I plan the show and pick the songs we will play.
Was it the same for the DVD, too?
Yes, I planned the Toronto concert.I decided how the show would be.I picked the songs. Then talked with the set director about the coordination.
Is it true that you pick your dancers?
Are you especially picking the hot ones?
Most of my dancers are women...What do you mean! : )
Well you are a married women...
That's right...I always become friends with my dancers.I mean even if I don't know them at first, you hang out together during the whole tour.Who are closer to you than anyone are musicians in your band and your dancers. That's why I end up having lots of new dancer friends after every tour.
Did marriage change anything?Like do you feel like you should be more decent on stage?
Marriage changed nothing about my job.I'm married to a musician, who else can understand me better than him?I'm the same person as I was before.Just I'm more happy, that's what changed. And of course I'm not trying to be more decent on the stage but I be more careful while doing acrobatic moves.Because there is someone at home waiting for me to come back OK!
While the Toronto concert was being recorded for the DVD did you ever think about how cameras recording you, what you will look like?
No, because I'm used to cameras.I don't mean the music videos. In my concerts too lots of cameras record me and my images caught from a lot of different angles are returned to the huge screens.
A question many people are curious about...Can tour life be dangerous for your voice? It's certain that it's tiring.
I never ever smoke.Biggest enemy of my voice that harm it is smoking.I try to drink as much water as my body needs. You know I lost my voice during this tour and had to cancel some USA concerts.I was really upset, angry with myself. But that happens to every singer during her career at least once.Unfortunately some people don't get it...Think that, in a tour I sing every night. With every night I mean like sometimes I have gigs for 5 nights in a row and that can be a serious danger for my voice.I have been working with a voice coach for a while.I got my old form, I can use my voice as good as I used to do.
For The Best Damn Tour you travelled almost everywhere in the world. How different are your fans in different countries?
There is something valid for every country; when people gather the energy formed is amazing!Them singing with me and getting crazy for music motivates me.Don't know why but in Europe people are still really hungry for music. It must be something cultural, or maybe their perspective of art. When I'm giving a concert in an Europe city I know that people will come there to have fun.Audience in my country ,Canada, is great.Since I'm one of them I see more love and support there than I do in other countries.Sometimes I find a crowd that barely likes something, came there to criticize instead of having fun. These times are hard for me of course, but by giving more effort on on the stage I try to entertain them and mostly I succeed.
Almost every celebrity that goes on a tour has a private costume design crew.Do you have such a crew?
No I don't, and never will I guess.I wear the same clothes on stage as I wear normally.I'm lucky that my style is different than all other celebrities in Hollywood!I even created a clothing line called Abbey Dawn for the people who dresses like me.Not to make people look like me.For the people who already dresses like I do.My inspiration was myself!Abbey Dawn has the clothes I like, all my favorites are in it.Like hoodies, skull accessories, everything that is colorful and shiny.Really fun.
So you are a fashion designer as well as you are a singer and a movie star.Which one do you like most?
I can directly answer that as music. But I think this way, all of these are art -yes, fashion is an art too- and areas where I can use my imagination. While singing on stage, writing my songs at home, recording them in studiio I always have a smile on my face.I'm really happy.I made 3 records.I always loved music very much and no matter what happens it will always have a priority.
