Like Microsoft, Google has said the Gmail accounts were compromised by a phishing scheme, in which users are duped, usually by a bogus Web site, into thinking they are giving personal information to their e-mail provider.
In fact, Google said it found a third list of account details, but didn't say how many e-mail addresses were on this list or which providers they were from, To view the link you have to Register.
The BBC said some of the 20,000 newly found accounts are old, unused or fake. But many of them were confirmed active.
It wasn't clear whether the new list is connected to the same phishing scammer responsible for posting To view the link you have to Register at pastebin.com, a data-sharing Web site. Those e-mail addresses were mainly from Europe and started with the letters A and B.
Because of that limited range of e-mail accounts, tech experts warned that many more addresses could be compromised. Users who suspect they are victims should change their account passwords and security questions as soon as possible.
The BBC did not disclose where it found the list of an additional 20,000 accounts, but said both lists are still viewable online.
"This should be a wake-up call to Google and Microsoft to educate their users," Carole Theriault, of the security firm Sophos, told the BBC.
