The only promotion Avril did in the UK was Daybreak, Britain's Got Talent, Radio 1 Live Lounge and a couple of interviews: I think the promotion is to blame for the whole era tanking in the UK. The single choices obviously made a bad impact, because to the public it just looks like she's recycling the same shit, she needs something groundbreaking for the fifth era. I think the album is just a "fan favourite" and doesn't really have hit potential.
The promotion was shocking - although she also did an amazing T4 Music thing which actually got a lot of positive feedback on Twitter. If I remember correctly it was the same week that Avril did her Live Lounge and that week was when WTH shot up the chart to #16. Still, #16 for a lead single and #9 for an album - after 3 consecutive #1s - is not good, I agree.

Smile isn't particularly age-appropriate but I think the average listener of Radio 1 doesn't look for that - look at Rihanna and Katy Perry. Still, I see what you mean about it being the same old, same old - all the MM material is like this and all 4 of them are basically the same song with different lyrics. I think the only MM song that was actually something NEW was I Love You and that's the song that always seems to be forgotten, yet I think it was the best choice for the lead single. Goodbye Lullaby has many good songs but it doesn't have anything that could match Complicated, My Happy Ending or Girlfriend.

I put it down to lack of awareness of the UK market and I really hope Epic handle this better.

I wouldn't call it "brilliant", but it should have been used as 1st single to be the perfect bridge, because it has a "bratty" part (TBDT), but also a "meaningful" part (GL). It looks more like a "classic" Avril pop-rock song (despite all the fake instruments) than WTH, and with a better video it could have worked well. People didn't even care about the song because of WTH, they didn't really want another "upbeat, bratty" song from Avril after that first single, and I don't really blame them.

I agree, she "recycled" her formula for those 3 singles, and the only one that was more "original" is usually ignored, probably because it's the one that is closest to what Avril wanted for GL. I agree that GL has some really good songs (some of her best stuff IMO), but it lacks that "shocking" factor that those songs you mentioned had. For next album, she needs to come up with something "shocking", but at the same time more meaningful than her last two first singles. The best of both worlds

All in all, it's been Lavigne's music, not her personal life, that has taken center stage.

it totally past away, I think it could a great single if promoted it well. As the bridge is still very special comparec with other songs, it's enough to deal with sell. At least its better than wth in my opinion. What I suggest is she needs to be crazy during perform that without acoustic way when she plays this kinda song included wth, lets see if she performed wth as accoustic verson what would happen u know? Theyre the songs simply fit with e-instrumental. Also if she could do it more careful, she would have an idea edit the song to make the whole thing wonderful. Unfortunately she didn
