Hi everyone, I just got back to my hotel from the concert and wanted to clear a few things up.
It was a great night. Avril put on an awesome show and was a true professional.
Sharifa is right when she says that the "car trouble" was probably just a way of explaining the delay - at the concert, Avril was getting quite overdue so people were starting to wonder what was wrong, so the staff had to say something. Obviously from Avril's tweets we now know that there was a security issue instead, but at the time, things were unclear - so the staff at the venue told us that the delay was down to "car trouble" so as to avoid panicking anyone. I think that was definitely the right thing to do.
When Avril came on stage at 9:40pm, she was about an hour late, but honestly that just added to the excitement! She looked quite happy and seemed to be having fun - for the first few songs I felt that I could sense that something wasn't quite right with her (she seemed a little distant, as though there was something else on her mind), but she pulled through and she absolutely rocked it - after the first few songs, she was totally her normal self, jumping around and having a good time and belting out the songs. I don't think very many people at all even realised anything was wrong.
Towards the end of the show, Avril suddenly disappeared backstage, and when she came back she seemed quite distressed, as she was having problems with her voice and said that she might not be able to perform the last 4 or 5 songs, but was going to try anyway. That's a truly admirable thing to do - a lot of artists would have just gone home, but Avril stayed and tried her best. She started singing "Complicated" but was having a LOT of trouble with her voice - she would open her mouth and nothing would come out, or her voice would suddenly disappear half way through a line. She took it in her stride though and kept trying, bless her. She was even smiling and laughing with Jim and the band at her repeated attempts! It was quite cute and really sweet in a funny sort of way - even Avril seemed to find it funny even though it must have been very frustrating for her. She took it really well and it was clear that she didn't want to give up. Obviously the stress of the "security incident" just before the show had got to her and made it difficult for her to sing, which is totally understandable, especially as after the show she tweeted saying that the incident had made her "fear for her life". Anyway, eventually, Avril laughed and shrugged her shoulders as if to say "oh well, I tried, haha!" and held the microphone out to the crowd for us to finish singing the song. She then told us that she was really sorry, that she loved us but she'd had a really bad day and she couldn't sing any more, and that was the end of the show. To be honest, it still felt like a full concert and didn't feel like there was anything "missing" - in fact, it was an amazing show and in no way did these events negatively affect it at all.
You have to hand it to her, she did the best job humanly possible - I doubt many people at all would be able to go out on stage and give a fantastic performance after going through something like that! I don't know if we'll ever find out what the incident was - it does sound like someone tried to attack her - but that's not important. The main thing is that she is safe. She put on an amazing show and I feel truly proud of her.
xx
