    The Songwriters of Bandaids Thread

It's a music forum; there's bound to be a good chunk of lyricists in the mix! This space will even be reserved to dissect Avril's song lyrics. But mainly, this is a thread for fellow songwriters of Bandaids to gather, discuss, share, and learn for all those passionate about songwriting.

(And hey, maybe it'll spark some future collaborations!)

    Alright songwriters, first topic starter:

When did you first start writing lyrics?

I started writing songs back in junior high school. I wrote some goofy songs when I was younger, but that's when I became more 'serious' about it, I guess. By the time I was in my early high school years, I had a decent number of songs written. I wish I knew where they were, though. I had them stuffed inside an issue of Circus Magazine (an old rock n roll magazine), because I didn't want anyone else to see them, and now I'm sure they're lost. My favorites were the power ballads Free To Love and Jackie.

Nice! My songwriting started out really goofy too, but I was still in my single digits. You can just hear the cheesiness with that description, huh? I remember around the time Let Go came out a decade ago, I started easing away from writing about pointless topics and instead started writing about things that were more personal. I used to write silly songs with my cousins, but found my niche through Avril's music especially, so I kept the personal stuff to myself. Now that I've gotten older, I've definitely been more open about my work and have let people take a look/listen. Though I can't stand singing and I cringe whenever anyone wants to hear my voice, haha.

This has been one of my long-time thoughts. I've been really itching to do this for a long time, but things that are pulling me out are that what words I should use and what theme too. But I do try to brainstorm some ideas in my mind and also taking ideas from artists/bands I listen to

I've had some people come to me about the same dilemma and I give the same advice every time (and it works!)

The key is to wait until inspiration hits. It can be unbearable at times, but when it comes, you'll know it. Whenever I have writers block or get stuck on something but I need to get something out of me, I take out a notebook and/or Word document and just start writing everything that's on my mind dealing with the matter. Basically like a journal. Don't focus on rhyming or structure or anything like that in this moment, just write and get it all out of you.

Afterwords, go back and read through it. Sometimes you'll find that everything you wrote already has an organic rhythmic flow. Then start highlighting the sections that stand out to you the most, that really mean the most to you, that appear unique, or that really gets the point across.

Take those sections and start piecing them together like a puzzle. Don't think too hard, just start aligning/arranging them in any order you please. But make sure the message flows. There are rhyming websites that can help you out if you're stuck on specific words, but try your best to use your own "language" so to speak.

Often, the best songs flow quickly and naturally when you don't think too much about it. If you think too much about it, the song can go stale quickly. You don't typically lead the way, the song leads you.

Sometimes playing around with random melodies/instrumentals helps the writing process, but it's different for everybody. You just have to find what works best for you

If you keep at it and venture into other aspects of it, they get less sucky. But you're not going to get a good song every time.

Yeah I know. I've had a couple of Eureka moments but nothing too fantastic so far!

I have started songwriting... But right now I'm having trouble writing the music (so I'm just rewriting Avril's songs pretty much because I'm using the instrumental of the song) But the lyrics are fine! Right now I'm pretty much writing empowerment songs and about how "lifes worth living for" (think Who Knows for example ) Though I don't think I can go anywhere with this songs
