(sorry for the long tangent lol)
No, he's right. They always criticize her lyrics from LG to GL.
But i agree with you when you said that the image is the principal factor, but she has all the fault!

Have you ever noticed how she looked during the ''break times'' and during an album promotion? Remember how she looked in 2006 and 2009?? and when the albums came out, the ''sk8er girl'' came back?

How does image factor on how whether or not an artist wins a Grammy?

She should release a single/album that makes her popular again and at the same time attract critics more. And she's never been a critics' favorite, so I doubt it. Avril is the type of artist that a lot of people love but they are "afraid" to admit it, she's a "guilty pleasure" for a lot of people.
    I seriously don't get that.

Why are people "afraid" to like Avril? Why is Avril relegated to just a "guilty pleasure"?

The more people think she is "immature", the more they get turned off by her music. The more turned off they get by her music, the more she is forgotten. The more she's forgotten the less likely she is to win a grammy. See what happens here?

RE: Why is Avril a guilty pleasure?

Because a lot of her more popular songs don't have a lot of meaning, like GF or WTH. They're just fun, catchy pop songs and it can be especially embarrassing for (straight) men to admit they listen to that kind of stuff.

Also, whenever people mention they like Avril, the general reaction is negative and the person gets made fun of. Why would you willingly tell someone you listen to someone that will generate that kind of reaction? Hence why people are "afraid" to say they like Avril because of the reactions you get. I don't tell people I like Avril unless they like her too or they ask, to be quite honest.

Avril's known for being in the teeny bopper crowd from Sk8er Boi on. Her music and image is still targeted towards such. If you listen to Avril, people generally put you in that category alongside her. Truth is, everyone listens to Avril - many just won't admit it. It's kind of like admitting to a crowd full of people that Hilary Duff and Miley Cyrus are your guilty pleasures. You're not going to get a hand clap of approval on that one. But, music is music. Listen to whatever you want.

^ I think everyone has at least one artist they listen to that is a "guilty pleasure" for them. Mine is Britney Spears.

I don't think the industry elite has ever taken Avril seriously. Ever since the LG era, they see her as another bubblegum mainstream pop singer with little songwriting skills and artistic credibility.
But that's because Avril is a mainstream pop singer who doesn't have the songwriting skills to differentiate herself. Avril makes some really fucking great pop songs; Runaway, Girlfriend, Complicated, Hot, What The Hell, etc, etc. That is her legit forte. She is a pop artist and she's damn good at it. She even shines more when she has people really pushing her artistry with songwriting/producing. Avril is really great at creating pop melodies, too.

It's very rare when we get a great song from Avril that shows her as a credible artist opposite of a pop starlet. You can name some of those songs off the top of your head right now, but you're bound to narrow some of them down the more you compare and contrast them alongside each other.

Think of it this way, her best song to date (I'm With You) took a slew of a pop team to compose. You may say this isn't your typical pop song, but it went to #1 on the US Billboard Pop Songs and the US Billboard Adult Pop Songs. It only hit #18 on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary charts.

If Avril didn't market herself as a pop artist, if Avril didn't have the image of a pop artist, if Avril didn't create pop songs - then the rest of the world would not see her as a mainstream pop singer. But that's what she is and that's what she's always done; from Let Go and on.

As far as her singles go, Don't Tell Me, My Happy Ending, and When You're Gone are her only singles that show any artistic credibility but still are commercial enough to do well on radio.

    I'm still perplexed.

Almost all female pop singers have scored hits that are essentially meaningless. Britney (HIAM), Lady Gaga (Just Dance), Katy Perry (California Gurls), Rihanna (Don't Stop The Music), Beyonce (Single Ladies), P!nk (Get The Party Started), Kelly Clarkson (My Life Would Suck Without You), Xtina (Candyman)- you name it. Even all of Taylor Swift's songs about boys aren't exactly the type of music that a vast crowd of straight men would thoroughly (and admittedly) enjoy.

Yet, the fans (both male and female) of all these women are spared of any mockery. At the same time, we Avril fans are looked upon as if something is wrong with us.

    I just don't get it.

What are you talking about? People get made fun of all the time for listening to Taylor, Britney, Katy, and Rihanna...and all the others you mentioned, too. It happens with every artist.

exactly. all straight men that i know listen to rap/hip hop. no one listens to mainstream pop except for some of them and most girls. i am a straight man, and have grown up with avril. she is everything to me. if i told a guy at school that, what do you think they would say? (hint: it wouldnt be nice). ill love avril no matter what, but as a 15 year old straight boy, i wouldnt announce to the school: I LOVE AVRIL LAVIGNE. everyone would call me a teenge girl :P
