    Goodbye Lullaby Campaign

    Under My Skin Fan #1

I feel “Wish You Were Here” would have been a much better lead single choice instead of “What the Hell”. “Wish You Were Here” is a catchy pop song that represents “Goodbye Lullaby”, while being commercial enough to be a single (Unlike most of “Goodbye Lullaby”). I feel though as if “Wish You Were Here” was the lead single, people would have actually saw that the album was not just another “boy-bashing” record and had much meaning behind all of it. If people saw the album for what it actually was (Not up-beat, boy bashing, etc. in other words a “The Best Damn Thing” pt. 2) then it would have achieved a lot more commercial success. I know this for a fact because we have experienced how the public felt about a matured Avril through the “Goodbye” music video, and they loved it. They talked about how she is no longer a little “sk8er girl” and is a fully grown woman. So people probably would have also taken Avril much more seriously if “Wish You Were Here” was the lead single because the public had also thought Avril had not released any meaningful music in the last five years. Excluding “When You’re Gone” & “Alice”, the public thought since “Girlfriend” all of her singles had been bratty, and all sounded the same. Those singles include “Girlfriend”, “Hot”, “The Best Damn Thing”, “What the Hell”, & “Smile”. Also if Avril had released “Wish You Were Here” instead of “What the Hell” as the lead single, she probably would have had a better chance of not getting those neon green highlights. Because upbeat means fun, and she decided green highlights would be something fun and cool to have, plus it would be for the “Smile” music video. As much as I loved the highlights, most of the public saw it as immature and thought that Avril seriously needed to grow up and act her age. So Avril eventually got rid of them, in time for her third single (which would be “Wish You Were Here”). Another reasoning it would have been better to do the sequence I stated before would be because “Wish You Were Here” is a different pop song than most music today. “What the Hell” sounded similar to a lot of music today, and some critics even said the song sounded like a Katy Perry reject. Same goes for “Smile”. “Wish You Were Here” was a mid-tempo song (Which you don’t find many of today) with a good hook that only sounded like an Avril song. No other singer could pull the song off, and I’m pretty sure not even Adele could. Because it was a song meant for Avril. Just like “Complicated”, no other singer can sing this song better than Avril because this song is just meant for Avril’s voice. So overall this era would have been much more successful and less disastrous if “Wish You Were Here” was the lead single. People would have seen that Avril matured and that she wasn’t a “sell-out”, and she could be true to herself and to her fans.

First off all, I'd like to say writing this was such a hard decision since I couldn't decide between Everybody Hurts and Goodbye. Also, I'm not a native English speaker myself, so please into account that. if you don't like my essay, don't show your hate for it here please. Thank you

    Task:

'What The Hell' misrepresented Avril's 'Introspective' era. Choose a single off the album that would both represent 'Goodbye Lullaby' but would also allow for Avril to experience commercial success. The argument needs to be 500 words long

Avril is known to be a trendsetter since day 1. She has always been different from all the usual pop stars out there. She’s always changed and evolved herself in each of her albums and all her first singles used to represent the theme she had for each of her records which made her achieve that “commercial success”, except for the last one, entitled ”Goodbye Lullaby”. Her first single 'What The Hell' misrepresented her 'Introspective' era. Hence this has been her worst album to date commercially wise.

Five reasons why Goodbye should be the first single:

    1. The surprise factor: The song is raw, emotional, catchy yet so different from what most pop stars came up with during 2011. It will surely stand out among most of the pop songs that are played on the radio. In fact, releasing Goodbye as the first single will be an unexpected but positive surprise from her to the audience, given the fact she’s known for her bratty image and showing her mature side will help her to achieve commercial success. For instance, her “Goodbye video” released on Youtube a few weeks ago as a thank you to her fans, has received a lot of positive feedback and has also achieved much more success than What The Hell and Smile together, which are both bratty and upbeat pop songs.

    2. Showcases her voice: Avril’s a great vocalist and What the Hell didn’t help her in that aspect.

    3. Represents the theme of Goodbye Lullaby: We know that the first impression is very important and Goodbye unlike What the Hell will show her maturity, growth and vulnerability as a musician. As we may all know, Avril is pushing 30. For this reason, the public would love it if Avril ditched that bratty image she was known for during TBDT era and What the Hell seemed like if she was still stuck into that era by showing the playful side of her in her music and image. Thus, the casual listeners didn’t even bother to give her a chance and buy her record because of What The Hell as her first single.

    4. Unconventional singles formula: Choosing a slow, tempo pop ballad might be a risk, but it's all worth it. Most pop stars single choice formula is mostly an upbeat pop song followed up by a ballad or mid tempo song, everybody is doing that, including Avril, and it’s getting stale and predictable. Therefore, choosing Goodbye, a slow tempo song, is the least expected thing you can ever expect from any female pop star.

    5. Targets a new audience: Not only tweens or teens will feel identified with our “motherfucking princess”. Middle aged people will also like this grown up Avril. As a consequence, she will not only have a chance in Billboard top 10, but also in the AC format. As a matter of fact, her fanbase is likely to expand and she will be taken more seriously in the music business.

Finally, given all this explanation, if Avril had read my essay she'd have experienced commercial success and would have also showed the world what Goodbye Lullaby really is.

I wouldn't call smile a "bratty" song like it said in Papayaxlover's essay. BUt I agree that Goodbye would have been a good first single : )
