People thinking shes immature certainly doesn't affect her sales. TBDT was her most immature album/image by far but it still sold amazingly well. GL didn't sell well because everything about it, from the single choices to the promotion and hype was really really poor. Avril wasn't interested in GL (not her fault after the issues she had with it) so the public weren't either, it's nothing to do with how people view her.

I see even the nicest of artists get criticized. For example, I am huge fans of American Idol country singers Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina. They are 18 and 17 years old, respectively, both very nice, humble, extremely talented singers. I see comments like, "Scotty sounds like a 40-year-old man," "He's ugly!", "He will not make it far in the music industry," etc. and about Lauren, "She's fat!", "She can't sing!", etc. These 2 kids would never say a bad thing about anyone and yet receive some very mean and rude comments from people who don't have the slightest idea of what they're even talking about. "Scotty will not make it far in the industry- his career is going nowhere"- um, he actually broke tons of records with his debut album and his album went platinum within 3 months of release. Yeah, he hasn't made it anywhere.

I'm not gonna justify people's criticisms of Avril, but sometimes she sort of brings it on herself. I mean, she does dress and act immature at times, and releasing songs like WTH doesn't help. The difference between her and other artists like Katy, Gaga, etc. who also dress and act immature is that those artists don't pretend to be mature. Avril goes on talking about how "deep" and "serious" GL is but then sings WTH, what do you think people are going to think? They see her as a hypocrite because she says how serious her music is but then sings a song that is the opposite (not her fault, we know, but the general public doesn't know that).

Zach and Katy are totally right. All artists get shit on for even the stupidest reasons that might not even have to do with their actual music (i.e., appearance, the way they talk, etc.) I mean, Adele is obviously a hugely popular and talented singer, and people will actually say something like, "She's so fat!" Okay, maybe she is, but why should that even matter? She's a singer, not a model. As Katy said, the only thing people really bash Avril for is immaturity/sellout-ness (which, like I said, she kind of brought on herself for making songs like GF and WTH and releasing a clothing line, perfumes, etc.) At least no one calls her fat. JB haters call him "gay" or call him a girl. Calling someone fat or gay is a way worse insult than being called immature (especially if she really does act immature sometimes). And the immaturity sometimes shows in her music, so it actually does affect her career. Being fat or gay has absolutely nothing to do with the artist's music. Like Katy said, some of these criticisms aren't exactly "unfair", per se. She could be called much, much, much worse. Don't read the comments and get over it.
Scotty sounds like Josh Turner! Which is what turned me to like him.....

It takes me awhile to start listening to an American Idol person. I don't know why though. But I prefer Josh because he's been around awhile.....

^ To be honest, I didn't know who Josh Turner was until Scotty sang his songs on AI. I don't really listen to country that much.

The ''age'' was an important factor for the ''flop'' of GL, it really was..because people wanted to see a grown up Avril since she is close to the 30's. During the TBDT she was 22, still young even if she dressed very well the majority of times and different too. AD ruined everything.

It's just the way it is.

A lot of people like her. Tons of my friends are casual listeners and will have her biggest hits on their iTunes. A couple of my friends still to this day say Smile is amazing and should have been a hit. I think with the GL era, she was just having a 'down' era. EVERY single artist has them, Madonna has had less popular times in her career. You also only have to look at Britney, and Christina. It's a case of having a monster hit record to get put back in the spotlight, that's how it goes. I'm sorry to bring up other artists, but look at Lady Gaga. Remember how huge she was in 2009/2010!? Now look, IMO people have moved on a little bit. She's got a huge fanbase, but the GP aren't as bothered anymore, because she was very overexposed. So that's a double standard in itself, when you get really popular, people soon become sick of you.

Avril has had so many achievements and has managed to remain fairly consistent for 10 years, and she's made her stamp in musical history. It's just up to Epic now to use the right marketing strategies and promote her properly, so people will have a motive to go out and buy a copy of the fifth record.

I hate it when people say her career is disappearing, it really isn't GL wasn't huge but it was Top 10 in many countries and WTH was a brief hit. That's with little promotion and not many people knew she was releasing a new album, so what would have if it was promoted!?!? I still blame RCA for that, they should have released the album back in 2009. Fact. I also blame them for Hot and The Best Damn Thing (single) for not doing too well, TBDT album was full of hits - it had the chance to be a real hit era, possibly with several #1's. To be honest though, that's all I'm going to say on it again now. It's in the past, she's with a new label who will let her do her thing, we don't have to worry about it. So let's forget RCrapA and get excited for a new era for Avril!!

Thank you! I've always said the exact same thing. People say "Well she's not mature enough", or "She needs to release mature music", that's really not the case. How many songs in the current Top 20 can you say are "Mature"!? I'll use the UK one as an example:-
    - Rizzle Kicks "Mama Do The Hump"
    - David Guetta "Turn Me On"
    - Nicki Minaj "Starships"

Hardly screams music maturity does it? That's because the public eat up anything that is catchy, and has a good hook. That's it. It doesn't matter whether it's a fun song like "Girlfriend" or mature like "Airplanes", as long as it has a hook and is catchy, they love it. They don't go out of their way to look for maturity though, and that's so obvious if you look at your countries current top 20.

None of the current superstars are "mature". Lady Gaga/Katy Perry/Beyonce, none of their music is particularly mature or grown up, but the GP eat it right up!

Because people expect Avril to be mature, but they don't expect other artist to do so, Like what I said, DOUBLE STANDARD! So people expect different things from Avrl than Katy's and other pop artist

What worked for those artists you mentioned will not going to work for Avril.

What I find ironic is Avril looks young, yet not allowed to act young...while other who looks very old for their age, some even older than Avril yet they are allowed to do so, even praised for it!

Yes the general public eat anything what other artist release and embrace it with open arms, but if it's Avril, it's a different story, If it's Avril the general public suddenly becomes critical.

Well, Beyoncè is very mature..just listen to her last album(1+1, I Care, Love On Top, I Miss You...).

Maybe the people dont want to see a mature Nicky Minaj, Katy Perry..cuz they are known to be childish and release no-sense songs... They knew Avril with albums like Let Go and UMS which are not like Teenage Dream, Pink Friday...

I hate the word "maturity," particularly as it relates to music. It's a vague, vapid word that has no meaning whatsover. Nobody can define exactly what it's supposed to mean, and even if and when they do, everyone has a different idea of it.

You can make the most mature music and image any artist can do, but you can also be the most childish, immature person.

Making a mature music is not a basic of how mature that artist is.
