North America is just the pulse of popular music. As is much of Europe. Trends are based on the UK/North American markets.

It's not fair because country music artists like Kenny Chesney are HUGE in North America, and get a ton of recognition. However, outside of North America, no one knows who Kenny Chesney is.

And then you have U2 and Madonna, who are relevant in all worldwide markets- North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Australia, etc. I was hoping that Avril could work her way to that level of global relevance, but I'm not entirely sure atm.
Really? I guess I never thought of that. Kenny Chesney (although I LOVE his music) isn't "that type" of Country music, he's very much towards a Jimmy Buffet, beach-y sound. Honestly, he's well liked and well known, but you still have those people that don't really care for him here. The people who are most well known around the world, as far as Country music goes, are the ones who are Pop-Country. Again, Pop. Hence Tay Tay Swift, Lady A, even Rascal Flatts. Everybody knows Dolly Parton, Reba, Loretta Lynn (HOPEFULLY), but who really outside North America can say they love that kind of Country music or even Texas Country? Not many probably. I haven't met many (or any). Pop, Hip Hop, R&B, and barely Rock is what's the "in" thing for music industry these days. So for Kenny to be big outside of North America he'd have to change his sound just to be more well known, like Lady A and Swift. Which, I pray to God he won't.

It should come as no surprise that anything pop-influenced will be more commercially successful than other music. That's kind of the point of pop music....

It's unfair how Avril was called a "sellout" in 2007, when P!nk has been hypocritical since the early 2000s.

How can P!nk have such a phony "anti-mainstream" appeal? What "big market"?

How can Avril be labeled a "sellout" when P!nk has turned herself into a cartoon?

Maybe becasue there was more Avril vs Britney than Pink vs Britney..It's the media's fault

But Pink have said more insult towards Britney...well not only to he but to other pop star....yet those fanbase of those pop stars don't hate Pink but hate Avril so much, even those that not even mentioned by her.

Funny thing is Pink is much more self contradicting than Avril, even until now, yet people let it go, Also, Pink is much closer to Britney and other "generic" pop girls than Avril's most poppiest image and music.

I am happy that in terms of politics and social issues, Avril is not pulling a "Pink" on us, specially being close with PETA

It's not surprising..... I just don't like that people change their sound and move from their music roots just to gain more popularity. I like change, change is good, and it's usually needed. For the reasons of Lady A and Rascal Flatts I don't like (this whole Country-Pop crossover they talk about) because it's just not the same to me. I'll take any type of Country, I like them all, but Pop-Country just isn't it to me. They start to lose that Country sound.... It's a shame that genres like Country music are so underrated.

HAHA! Thanks, Hank. I enjoyed those a lot..... I like to listen to music from the 40's and 50's.....

I love Texas Country, it's a different breed of Country. Like Josh Abbott Band, Eli Young Band, and even Casey Donahue (today's Texas Country). Definitely can't forget about Willie and Janis!

I don't really listen to Modern Country Music...so, am not familiar with those names you mentioned. My era is more in tune with 'Ernest Tubb and his Texas Troubadours', Gene Autry.....and old Mance Lipscomb...

    Just another thing....

The general public regards Avril as a "pop tart" who strictly appeals to teenyboppers. People often equate her name with Justin Bieber.

Relatively few of today's female pop artists are labeled as "pop tarts". In fact, the only other female pop singers that are considered as such are Katy Perry, Ke$ha, and probably Rihanna.

In stark contrast, no one has labeled Taylor Swift as a "pop tart". Similarly, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, P!nk, and Kelly Clarkson are not seen as "pop tarts". And, for some reason, people do not view Britney and Xtina as "pop tarts" anymore.

Why is Avril being lumped into the "pop tart" category along with Katy and Ke$ha?

Why aren't Taylor, Gaga, Britney, Beyonce, P!nk, Kelly, and Xtina likewise being called "pop tarts"?

What is Avril doing wrong that Taylor, Gaga, Britney, Beyonce, P!nk, Kelly, and Xtina are doing right?

Is this another prime example of the general public's double standard against Avril?

I don't know. It's just irritating to me.

double standard, she's just unlucky regarding that, and no matter what she do, even if she do the right thing, she always be wrong in the genera public's eye.

I also think Avril's young looks and the fact that she can still continue to attract teens and tweens.

Britney and Xtina have already gone through their teenybop, pop tart phase. I don't think they should still be considered that. Kelly? I don't know, honestly... and Taylor is not the pop tart, but the "country cutie". Labels are so vague anyways, just let people think the way they do and move on..... Some people don't see Avril as a pop tart and others do, same the way people think Swift is a "Country Cutie" when others think she's just another Pop-ish star. So on and so on....

Where is the difference? The blonde hair?? the heels??
Of course people will see her like a teen-pop star if she continues to appear that way.(and sings song like WTH and Smile, but they are not the main problem)
I saw people love Smile and hated the video, because of that look.
I saw many people shocked when the Vanity Fair shoot came out.

Yes she grew up, but she doesn't show it, she shows it only on her breaks time(2006-2009)
So i hope when the album will come out, she wont re-start to dress like a teenger and re-have the colour streaks.
