This thread is another endless cycle of "she must not release that as a single","she should be more like this, like that", etc...
well enough with the talking. after all the info we got is yet to be proven true or not.

No shit, they're her two last first singles. First singles are always more successful. People do NOT prefer fun/bratty Avril more. WTH did not sell Goodbye Lullaby at all. A song like 'Push' would have. 'Smile' would have flopped no matter what. It sounded like a song Miranda Cosgrove should have sung. It mixed childish melodies with explicit lyrics. Adults didnt want it because it sounded shit and parents wouldnt let their kids listen because it had references to date rape.Originally Posted by how does it feel To view the link you have to Register
Also if you're saying 'recent' hits is back for Girlfriend (5 years ago), WYG was a much bigger worldwide hit than WTH. 'Hot' was even more publicly recognised than WTH. Problem with 'Fun' Avril? She already did that. Why keep doing the same shit over and over? People already have her fun songs. They already have her depressing UMS songs. People just want songs now. They want a new current sound from her. So no, a fun Avril like WTH or Girlfriend would not be the direction to go in, unless the direction you're heading is on top of the Bubbling Under charts. Avril needs a sick beat, yeah the song can be fun but we don't want the 'fun' that she used to be. We want a different side of her. If she wants to stay a one-trick pony then she'll be treated like one by the public, a has-been.

UMS Avril?
I didn't know there were more Avrils, based on the number of her records.![]()
Like it or not, even though she's a lot like me, we're not the same.

Yes. The music can (and imo, needs to be) fun and upbeat, but NOT "bratty."Originally Posted by -Lewymocha- To view the link you have to Register
Just for general reference, here are the median chart positions (US, UK, and Canada) for all her album singles:
Complicated - 2
Sk8er Boi - 8
I'm With You - 7
Losing Grip - 43
Don't Tell Me - 5
My Happy Ending - 9
Nobody's Home - 24
He Wasn't - 59
Girlfriend - 1
When You're Gone - 8
Hot - 45
The Best Damn Thing - 92
What the Hell - 11
Smile - 68
Wish You Were Here - 65

Chart positions are good and all but you also have to think about the general buzz they created because outside of the 1st single, people already HAVE the album so they don't buy the song which affects the later singles chart positions harshly. The buzz and actual awareness a song creates is what will sell an album. I mean GF and WYG did a fantastic job at selling that album. Hot was never gonna chart high but because the first two singles were huge, Hot was played several times a day on radio stations, especially around Europe, where as What The Hell got snubbed and stayed in with the fanbase, who brought the song up to its high chart peak through purchase. The song itself created no buzz or awareness for the album, hence the not so impressive album sales of Goodbye Lullaby.
What was interesting about WYWH for a 3rd single was that it actually brought awareness to an album. It brought the album back into the Billboard 200. An 8 month old album selling near 8-10 k a week, was very good especially considering the type of era Avril had. WYWH did a fantastic job and you can see by that song how a good single choice can affect record sales. Imagine that single being released earlier in the era?

Okay, I see your point and agree with itOriginally Posted by -Lewymocha- To view the link you have to Register
. The public don't like "fun" Avril more, but I'll backtrack a bit here - they don't care what "side" of Avril they see, as long as it's good music, I'd say that's a fair observation. I just don't agree with people saying people need more "mature" Avril, because ultimately, they don't care whether it's mature or not - which is a good point you made about people not wanting a "Part 2" of Avril. We've heard some different sounds, so now people are ready for a new sound
. Hot may have had public recognition, which it rightly deserved, but people obviously didn't recognize enough because they didn't go out and buy it.
I'm sorry but I disagree, Push just wouldn't have worked as a lead single. It's an absoloutley wonderful song, but it just doesn't sound current enough for radio. It would have sold Goodbye Lullaby in terms of in representing its sound, which What The Hell didn't, but WTH was at least a moderate success and led GL in the right direction. Push was single material, but more 3rd/4th single. Defiantly not a lead single.

WTH was a moderate success in 3 markets though. Hot didn't sell because people already had the album. 'Hot' would have went top 10 if it were the second single, as much as I dislike the song, it was all due to the fact that every 3rd person had TBDT the album. WTH flopped in the European market which has most of the top 10 markets. U.S., Japan are the biggest markets, so good for Avril but you have to remember the other 8 remain in Europe, so they decide a huge portion of a WW star. It's not like Avril actually smashed U.S., she had moderate success there with the first single. The album was considered a huge flop there. A million less copies than her last album sold.Originally Posted by how does it feel To view the link you have to Register
Anyway, my point is that songs like 'Push' don't do as well in the singles charts, but the AC audience is famous for buying albums. The song would have hit top 30 (like Don't Tell Me) but would have shifted the actual record. We need a song that sounds different, but real, so people feel like it's worth spending their money on Avril. There's nothing like insincerity to throw a buyer off a purchase. WTH was that.

People do want upbeat music. What they don't want is the 'brattiness' of songs like What the Hell and Smile. It's absolutely possible to have a great, fun song that isn't that. It's one possibility, but not the only. And that's very much what I'm hoping for. I don't want a sad, depressing album like UMS was. Don't get me wrong, I love UMS and it's my 2nd favorite album of hers, but we've already had that. I'm ready for a good, solid, upbeat album.

It's all about promotion. If there is no promotion, albums and singles are doomed from the start. The singles from this era were not promoted well enough, so they did not perform well.

Actually, sorry, only 5 of teh remaining 8 are European. Biggest music markets;
1. USA
2. Japan
3. Germany
4. UK
5. France
6. Canada
7. Australia
8. Netherlands
9. Italy
10. Brazil

Basically, we need upbeat and mature. I recently realised; her only upbeat, mature first single was her debut that she wrote eleven years ago![]()
