Can you please explain exactly what you're talking about? She got one of her biggest hits, and relaunched her brand/career that was starting to stall after Under My Skin.
In the long run, TBDT did mostly trouble for her, Because of that, people have even more reason to take her seriously, and those who think she's a sell out from the start are like " see, we are right, Avril is just like Britney Spears ".

Even her biggest hit "Girlfriend" is not good for her in the long run, why? Because it's her most known song, It's the song that made people think Avril is a bratty, immature boyfriend stealing sell out, and her serious hit " I'm With You" and " My Happy Ending " have been put aside, because of that song, people have forgot she have a soft, serious side.

Can you imagine how huge her fanbase today if they have not left her in 2007? If she continue with her "legit" anti hollywood image, Avril is filling huge arenas at the moment.

Anyways can you explain how did TBDT save her from irrelvence? Look at the UMS era, her career, her fanbase is very and going strong, when TBDT came out, she lost ALMOST all of her fanbase.

It's "Avril's most immature album" when it's the major UMS people that can't get passed her "UMS angsty teen phase". TBDT didn't ruin anything! It actually launched her and helped her! I loved Avril even more because of TBDT. I love Avril's fun "immature" and "bratty" side.

I'm sick of hearing people *cough*avrilxxx15 *cough* saying that they want what's best for Avril. Were you there for Avril at the start of her career? Do you get her career going? Avril's been doing this for 10 years. I'm pretty sure she knows what's best for her own career. Why can't she do what she want without people bitching? If people don't listen to the music she puts out, then that's there business. Not Avril's.....
I don't hate TBDT album, I love that album and image, but my point is there's ton of reason why Avril should not do it again, and there's literally hundred reason why it is viewed as her worst album ever, and most of their reason is not even music related.

Like what I said, there's improvement in that album, specially in lyrics department, Yes even her fun songs are witty and creative.

Regarding your question about UMS, Because the image of UMS is her most legit and mature, the angst made her different from those other pop stars who seem embraced the celebrity life style, while the UMS Avril seems to be against it, thus making her more appealing to anti establishment crowd.

I have to wonder how TBDT would be perceived by fans if it were as big as UMS was and UMS instead was the least liked album... I think people hold UMS in such high regard because it's less pop and commercial. However, the album is not nearly as great as everyone says it is. It contains some of her weakest lyrics ever and it's depressing to listen to. I do like the songs and it has some of her best songs (Together, He Wasn't, MHE, Nobody's Home, Freak Out), but I really don't get why it's held in such high regard and put on a pedestal as the almighty untouchable 100% perfect Avril album of all time. It's completely overrated.

I applaud Avril for changing her image and musical style to keep herself relevant. However, she could've done it without all the brattiness in her singing and the obnoxiousness in her persona.

Plus, you have the double-edged sword phenomenon. While TBDT kept Avril relevant, you have the general public with their "she was on her way to being credible and then took a giant step backwards and turned herself into a newfound pop tart" mentality.

Like I had mentioned before, UMS was perceived by the general public as a step forward. This was because people had seen LG as strictly "teen-pop". In a way, Avril showed some semblance of maturity and progress with UMS. And the album proved that Avril was no one-album wonder.

All the while, the general public failed to highlight the weak lyrics, the repetitiveness, the moodiness, and the anst-y teen-diary vibe that dominates UMS.

Well, it's not about popularity for them. It's about them stubbornly insisting that Avril cater to them and them alone. It's about people not being able to simply move on if they stopped like the music Avril was making. It's not enough for them to simply walk away quietly; they have to loudly proclaim how much they DON'T LIKE the music she's been making for the MAJORITY of her career now.

We all get it: Avril has grown up and changed. The time has long since passed to either accept it or move on. Time to get over it.

(This isn't directed at you, obviously, or anyone in particular. It's directed at the people who obviously stopped being fans a long time ago and cannot accept that she is not a teenager anymore.)

I love the TBDT and I wouldn't want to change that era in general.

Also, I remember plenty of complaints from fans here during the UMS era.

There was a thread in 2004 that must have had like 500 replies. It was a photo of Avril smoking, and my god you would have thought the world was ending from the reactions of people here.

Wait, you think her music on TBDT is "immature", but you think Avril's UMS (the moody, angsty TEENager days) are mature???

I think i used my words in a wrong way, what I mean is people think the music of TBDT is immature compare to UMS, while they are fooled that UMS is her mature image and music, when in reality it's not.

Its all about image, and like what Zach said, they are pissed off because TBDT did bring some fans from different crowd that they don't like ( or even hate )

In a way I think Avril starting her career as a teenager both helped her as well as did her a disservice. Many teens were able to relate to her and bought her album, but at the same time she was still developing. If she hadn't come out with an album until at least TBDT era or even GL era, I can bet you not as many people would be so up in arms about her "changes."

Yeah, that's exactly why people who become known and develop a fan base while they are young often have problems. They become known for how they are as a teenager but then they grow up and naturally change, and that alienates some fans.

To me, I really don't think there's one female pop artist who has a loyal fanbase, except for Madonna.

A lot of female pop singers remain successful because they A) follow popular trends, and/or B) rehash the same overall sound over and over again.

Would Britney still be relevant today if she experimented a little and released a folk-pop album? Nope.

Avril is one of the only female artists who 1) doesn't wholly follow trends, and 2) doesn't rip herself off time and time again.

We'll have to see how Adele's career plays out. She's certainly not following the current pop trend but she doesn't have enough albums yet to determine how much diversity she can have in her sound.
