That's why I find that commentary ( from a guy in ultimate guitar forums ) very insulting and misinformed,

And you nailed about Japan being the hardest market to break into it, people who insult Japanese market thinks that the reason some irrelevant can make it in Japan is because people there are outdated on whose hot in America, when in reality Japanese people are updated and loves pop culture.

I think the whole Asian market is not easy to penetrate, there are artist who are at their career peak yet they find it hard to sell concerts in that region.

But Japan as a market should be more recognized, it seems to be underrated.

I can't actually believe you said that. I can't name ONE artist that hasn't reinvented themselves! Are you actually joking about Britney? She's gone from Pop, to Pop/Rock, to dance, to club - and that's just her music. Her image is constantly changing. You mentioned Beyonce... have you seen how much she's changed? The only one I agree with us Taylor. She hasn't changed much but Taylor's been active for what? 2 years? Avril's been active for 10 years. BIG difference. Mark my words, Taylor will do what Miley did and come out with a shocking album saying that she's "Grown up".

Artists HAVE to reinvent themselves to stay relevant. Fact. How has Madonna done it? Reinvented herself! How has Britney done it? Reinvented herself! Look at Gaga, how many times has she reinvented herself and she's only been in the public eye since 2008. This is such a double standard with Avril, people say she's changing to much etc. Yet if she was still in tank tops and ties singing songs like Sk8er Boi at her age, people would laugh at her. So of course she's going to reinvent herself. To me, the only reinvention was the transition from Under My Skin to TBDT. Her image has been very consistent since 2007.
    This! Agreed 100%!

    That's.... interesting..... How so?

I really don't see Swift doing that..... 1.) She practically depends on that innocent good girl image (although, Miley did too at one point). BUT 2.) She's not an arrogant brat like Miley.

Exactly. She only had the "tomboy"/sk8er/punkish image for about 3 years from 2002 to 2005. For the MAJORITY of her career now, she's had an image similar to what she has now. Yet some people still haven't accepted it after 6-7 years.

To me, I think the reason people have had a hard time accepting it is because her old image was seen by many as "cool," "anti-Hollywood," "anti-glitz-and-glamour," etc. She seemed less manufactured than other pop artists and more relatable. Then when TBDT came out and her image became more pop, a lot of people saw her as a manufactured bubblegum pop artist like the others.

Yeah but the problem with that is that if she had stayed like that, then it would have become fake. She would have been putting on an act to continue the image she got when she was younger.

It wasn't really even in the beginning of The Best Damn Thing. Even though I was in a very youthful phase at that time, I still really liked her image. It was only when she brought out a clothing line, a perfume line and endorsed all these products (that she had said in the past she would never do) was when I started to see her as somebody else. That's when I think people found it difficult to relate to her. I don't know if it would have challenged her followers support so much if she hadn't put the effort and emphasized all these anti-statements when she was young...unless someone had been spoon-feeding her these thoughts all along.

Anyway; I know we've all had countless of arguments about what we say and how we think when we're young is entirely different to how we view things today, and that is the truth, but normally open mindedness comes from a very natural and human-like place. It's part of our evolution and adaption to ourselves and our environment. But Avril is coming from an environment none of us are familiar with. Hollywood. Crap loads of celebrities wander into various business deals for more money and recognition. You want your face to be continuously out in the public to capture success. It's media bullshit, but it sells and there's lots and lots and lots of money involved. I do think a lot of people would choose what Avril is doing, regardless of what they used to think was stupid. I'm not saying what Avril decided was bad. It was her decision, and that's what she wanted. But I, personally, cannot relate.

You're right- the whole clothing line and other endorsements made it seem as though all she cared about was money. And the decision to hire dancers and do these cheesy routines made her seem like a Britney Spears wannabe (to some people).

The thing with her clothing and perfumes though, is that at least it's something she wants to do. It's not like someone told her, "You have to do clothes so you'll stay relevant and make more money." Any endorsements she's done are things that she wanted to do and she is very much involved in every aspect of it. Most other celebs that have clothes probably have little to no involvement with the designs, whereas Avril does create the majority of the designs and actually wears her clothes as well, and mostly because she had trouble finding clothes she liked. She's stated numerous times that clothes and perfumes are another creative outlet for her- it's not like she's doing drugs or something.

Nowadays most celebs have clothes and other stuff outside of their main career, so I don't see why Avril can't either.

Plus, it depends on the person. Some musicians may be satisfied with just music. Others may be interested in acting, clothes, etc.

I would really like to be a musician one day too, and I think if I were, I would focus on music in the beginning, but if I became more well-known, I'd like to be involved with some kind of foundation or something like that. I wouldn't want to just do music 24/7.

I agree. And she's been thinking about it since she was nineteen. But would she have even considered it without such attention drawn to her image in the first place? Probably not. I feel if she came out with a clothing line much earlier in her career, there would have been more of a demand with consumers. She started it too late though, when her style had drifted from the familiar and likability for some people.

Any endorsements she's done are things that she wanted to do and she is very much involved in every aspect of it.
Proactive? Canon Cameras? T-Mobile? I don't think so. Things like Sally Hanson and her fragrances sure, but...I've always found it beyond cheesy when celebs decide to commit to needless extensions to their brand. Which is what Avril is...a brand. She trade-marketed her name a couple years back.

She's stated numerous times that clothes and perfumes are another creative outlet for her- it's not like she's doing drugs or something.
Comparing someones creative outlet as opposed to doing drugs is not the best of examples I encourage creativity in anyone, especially with Avril. But I get fed up with the same celebrities following the same celebrity criteria with clothes and perfumes and this and that and that and this.

I would really like to be a musician one day too, and I think if I were, I would focus on music in the beginning, but if I became more well-known, I'd like to be involved with some kind of foundation or something like that. I wouldn't want to just do music 24/7.
I wouldn't either, but again, I wouldn't want to follow the typical celebrity path and be thrown in with the rest of the Hollywood crews "accomplishments". It's unoriginal. The only extension of Avril's career I genuinely admire is her foundation. She's using her voice and platform for good. She's not selling anything. She's contributing to something that needs attention. Some may say that this is also following the leader in terms of committing to other outlets, but it beats all the other unnecessary marketing of brand products.

And don't compare her to Miley, Miley Cyrus had another story, situation..she wanted to demonostrate that she wasn't Hannah Montana since people saw her like this. Taylor Swift is Taylor Swift.

Avril also have a lot of decent, classy recent red carpet moments, mixed with being playful.

Anyways I think it's unfair for us to judge Avril and her depth, I did the same mistake. I am fooled by her wild, fun crazy side, her happy bubbly persona and her girly dress, same thing that the fact she currently lives in Hollywood, I am fooled by her glitz and glamour, BUT if you take some time to ponder and take a look deeper, there is more than meets our eye, yeah given ALL people will and did change by that place, but hey, I believe she's one of those who handled the change better, specially the fact that she's been big star at an early age, she still manage to keep her feet both on the ground.

Oh yeah she did some mistakes to, just like every celebrity and human being on the planet, she had her fair share of worst moments in her, but that's life, she learned from it and will still keep learning.

I am not saying I know her in person, But I am not bias either, the point is there are obvious hints that you can tell she's a deep person, not only by hollywood standard but as a regular person.

I can point out those obvious things, but it will took a lot of space.
