    Question About Let Go B-sides

Are the B-sides that were leaked those songs that her label forced her to sing or are they the songs she was writing to "try to figure out her sound" and then she subsequently moved to L.A. to "get a fresh start?" Most of the B-sides sound a lot more pop than the rest of LG so I was wondering if they were songs she didn't want to sing.

I think she did want to sing them, but then her style changed from country to more pop/rock. I think she didn't include them on the album cos they weren't as good as the other songs and the theme was different. I doubt she would have released them if she really didn't want to sing them though

Probably some of both. I mean Get Over It was released as a B-side and so was I Don't Give.

I remember that she said they wanted her to sing "Shania Twain/Faith Hill" new country type of songs and they were going to have people write for her. Did she ever record any of those songs and THEN she asked to write, or did she ask right from the start and never actually recorded any of those songs?

Well, i think she recorded, we have Falling Into History and even Falling Down(?) for example.
I always thought that country was her style, she had the perfect voice to do it ç___ç

I think it's just a mather of her wanning to figure out what her style is, what kinda music she wants to make. She was experimenting and having fun with making a whole bunch of different songs but ended up not using them just because they didn't fit the rest if the album, that is, the rest of the songs that represented her style more

After Arista signed her, she spent an additional 8 months in New York working with writers but she couldn't find her sound or anything she was really happy with. They were losing time with her and becoming nervous so as a last resort kind of thing, they flew Avril out to Los Angeles and basically her work with The Matrix started almost instantly. It was then that the bulk of Let Go was written and recorded. I've always firmly believed that a good percentage of the Let Go b-sides were from the very first few months of her recording contract while she was still in limbo, getting used to co-writing and working with strangers and ultimately trying to find her sound.

I know the Matrix and Clif Magness were definitely in LA, Peter Zizzo and she wrote "Why" in New York before she even got a record deal but the others she wrote with on Let Go, no clue.

    It's a mixture of both really .

There's some Let Go B sides that she probably really liked (like I Don't Give, she played that on the TTSMU Tour), but just didn't make the record. Like Take it didn't make Under My Skin, and Alone didn't make The Best Damn Thing. Some of the earlier B Sides (like Why), are some of the very first songs she worked on when she moved to New York when she was 15, and they're very country sounding, you can hear the transition from that into her more Pop/Rock stuff. Those were the songs when she was trying to find her sound. Then of course she worked with The Matrix, and there's probably a whole bunch of unheard stuff she did with them. And then she did her heavier stuff with Magness (Unwanted and Losing Grip). Avril has actually said she's grateful for the work she did with The Matrix, but she much preferred the other stuff on Let Go, the less Pop stuff. Anyway, I digress!

The B-Sides such as I Don't Give and Get Over It were from the Matrix, so those came closer to the albums release.

The unreleased leaked songs such as Tomorrow You Didn't, All You Will Never Know, Once And For Real and Make Up were probably recorded when she was trying to find her sound. Honestly, those tracks sound like tracks from an unreleased Avril pop-folkish album. They actually remind me something Jewel, Lisa Loeb, etc would do!

^ Yeah I agree- the ones she wrote with the Matrix and Peter Zizzo obviously came later, but I think the ones where we're unsure of the co-writers were much earlier. Some of the B-sides are actually some of her best songs!

LA Reid signed her after hearing her perform Why, and that song has that somewhat folkish sound. Maybe that's why they thought she should do country/folkmusic and perhaps at that time those songs ^were created. In a way she took a drastic turn with the songs that ended up on Let Go. It would be kind of fun to know it there was any talk between the record label at that point. I mean, if they wanted to sign a country artist that turned into something totally different - was it in a way a risk they took and did it happen as easily as it seems to be?!
