^You're right. When she met and auditioned for LA Reid, she did two covers by Faith Hill and "Why". The latter was the first song she wrote on this trip with Cliff Fabri in late 1999.

I remember hearing the first song she wrote after touching LA was "Unwanted", Magness being the first person she met up with. Man how the record company wasn't into those songs. I think it was when they heard "Complicated" that they gave Avril the biggest chance. It was single material in their eyes straight away.

They initially signed Avril strictly as a songwriter but Avril couldn't find her sound after urging her way into being a co-writer. Don't quote me on this but I believe I remember Avril even denying the existence of a lot of those earlier Let Go demos and recordings because she just wasn't into them. I'm not even certain how much of her input was put into those.

They were losing time with her and becoming nervous so as a last resort kind of thing, they flew Avril out to Los Angeles and basically her work with The Matrix started almost instantly. It was then that the bulk of Let Go was written and recorded. I've always firmly believed that a good percentage of the Let Go b-sides were from the very first few months of her recording contract while she was still in limbo, getting used to co-writing and working with strangers and ultimately trying to find her sound.

I know the Matrix and Clif Magness were definitely in LA, Peter Zizzo and she wrote "Why" in New York before she even got a record deal but the others she wrote with on Let Go, no clue.
And when do you think she wrote Unwanted, the first written for Let Go?

I know Avril in early interviews said that they tried to make her sing songs and she was like "I don't want to sing other people's songs.." And LA Reid talked about that too how they had more adult type music in mind for her and she didn't like it and then they sent her out to L.A. to write songs.

I'm PRETTY sure that, for example, "headset" wasn't written by her. I know some other band once played it and it went under their name, some people commented and said "that's Avril's song" and they responded that it wasn't hers, it was someone trying to sell his/her songs to artists. I don't think the band exists anymore though.

Also, if I had to take a guess, I'm sure there are more b-sides that weren't written by her.

Artists go in and record a bunch of demos, then the songs get picked, then the album is created, hence why we have so many b-sides from that era. She had to record them as a demo and probably spoke up later and said she wanted to try something different and write some songs herself

You're saying that Headset is a cover? I always thought that the song was written by her, since it's on of those songs like My World. May I know which band is it? I'm kinda surprised now.

Sometimes - rather than the fact that she didn't pick the b-sides because it's not what Let Go's all about, I think she didn't release most of them because it's not written by her. What I know for sure is that Tomorrow You Didn't and Falling Into History is not written by her.

No, it's not a cover but it wasn't written by her either as far as I know. I tried as hard as I could to find the band but I think it doesn't exist anymore. I'm pretty sure this girl was the lead singer: To view the link you have to Register
So maybe you can send her a message and ask her about it..

So, it's not a cover because no artist has officially released it but it's not written by her (or that band) either. According to wikipedia (which, in turn links to another source, I'll post them both) the song "headset" was written by Peter Zizzo.
(sources: To view the link you have to Register & To view the link you have to Register )

Now, you may ask, why did that band record it as well? Well, if this information is true, then Peter Zizzo wrote the song, gets Avril to record it, she didn't like it and decided not to release it = no money for Peter. It's still his song and so he tries to give it to other artists in the hope that they get successful and so he can make money on them from royalties
The song "headset" should've never been leaked so that's why there's a confusion, it was never released, it was just leaked. Who knows what other artists might have recorded that song too but didn't like it

Hope that helped! (the story is kinda the same as "falling into history", Avril recorded it but didn't release it and so the song was given to another artist (Brie Larson)
