I have equal sympathy for both. It was neither of the family's faults for what happened. I would feel more sorry for the family of the victim if the criminal wasn't killed. But what if the criminal had children who would never see their parent again?Originally Posted by avrilxxx15 To view the link you have to Register

You got a point about what makes a crime bad enough to for a criminal to be qualified for a death row? Like what if that person murdered that guy out of revenge or trying to take justice on his own hand, What if the murdered person is a serial killer or a rapist? What if a guy killed someone out of self defense?Originally Posted by HayLin ♫ xx To view the link you have to Register
I think the law should be more flexible in such scenarios, just because someone killed somebody, it can't be called a serious crime instantly.

Exactly, that's what I was saying. The circumstances are different each time so it would be very hard to judge which crimes are bad enough for the death penalty to be an option. And then the media attenttion and public protests would not look good for the country so it would be impractical as well. I understand that some countries still have it, but they have never abolished it and brought it back. If the government suddenly tried to reintroduce it in the rest of the world there will be chaos.Originally Posted by avrilxxx15 To view the link you have to Register

I have read all the comments, and I still insist that when we kill another
human being; even with the legal sanction of the courts; we are descending
to the same level as the murderer who originally perpetrated the crime.
It is our 'thirst for vengeance' which motivates us.
Sivan illustrates this very well when she wrote: "No one here would have
been able to live properly, knowing that this criminal is alive".
So, the execution is performed for purposes of vengeance, not for purposes
of justice.
Teffi wrote: "Imagine your family was murdered, what kind of justice would
you seek for? An eye for an eye, isnt it?"
Mahatma Gandhi said: "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."
In the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says:
You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.'
But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the
right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and
take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to
go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not
turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
Now, if any of you think that it is all bullshit, I remember a young lad of thirteen
years old. who lost an eye, because he failed to follow the Lord's instructions.
You see, he was standing at a bus shelter, when he was approached by three
teenage boys, who demanded his money. He resisted, and a scuffle broke out,
which resulted in the loss of one of his eyes. Incidentally, he had the grand total
of five dollars in his pocket.
Is that a good price for an eye?

When I was in my late teens, I was working in a Montreal tailor shop, whichOriginally Posted by Sivan5353 To view the link you have to Register
had a bakery shop next door. That bakery shop was run by two cousins, Polish
Jews, who were Holocaust Survivors, both having numbers tattooed on their arms.
One of the cousins was friendly towards me; whereas, the other was not.
The friendly cousin, Mr. Shapiro, told me once, the reason why he left Israel
to immigrate to Canada:
He said that he became disgusted with the manner in which his fellow Israeli
citizens were treating the recently immigrated Sephardic Jews, who came from
Yemen and North Africa. They used to refer to them as 'Schwartzers', which is
Yiddish for 'Black'.
He was disgusted and ashamed of his own people, who had suffered so much,
due to racial prejudice and discrimination...and yet they had not learned their
lesson.
That was the same year that Israel executed Eichmann.

Well, this man is right, 50 years ago that was like that (the same as the discrimination to black people in the US), now its not exist anymore,"only" to Israeli arabs.Originally Posted by hank To view the link you have to Register

You must remember that I was only 17 or 18 years old, when I heard that story.Originally Posted by Sivan5353 To view the link you have to Register
It made a very big impression on me personally, since I had spent a lot of time reading, and knew all about the Holocaust...and I was surprised that people who had suffered so much because of their race/religion; would turn around and discriminate against other Jews in their own land; just because they happened to have a darker skin colour.
Mr. Shapiro left the country because of it.
So, things haven't really changed in 50 years, if the Israelis are still discriminating against people in their own land. The Yemenis and Maghrebis have simply changed coats with the million and a half Israeli Arabs...

Well, I really don't wanna start talking about that cuz it could be last forever. But I'll make it short.Originally Posted by hank To view the link you have to Register
Things have changed in 50 years of course, its not a discrimination on the level of 50 years ago.
I don't agree with this discrimination against the arabs but I understand it, since Israel have known lots of terror attacks againg us by Arabs terrorists. (I know that not all the arabs are terrorist don't worry.....)
But that's it.. I don't wanna start a whole discussion around this
