Morbid Elvis Presley Merchandise? The King of Rock & Roll's Tomb For Sale
With a fanatical following like his, it’s no surprise Elvis Presley merchandise of all varieties will, at some point or other, be put up for sale or on auction. Today's announcement that The King of Rock & Roll’s Memphis tomb will be placed under the hammer has stunned some fans. “Selling collectible merchandise and memorabilia has always been a part of the music business,” says Shawn of Planet 13™, renowned online music store, “but auctioning a real crypt takes it to a whole new level.”

A serious music fan will scour the globe to collect items related to, or connected with, their favourite artists. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Kiss – to name just a few bands – are well known for having a wide variety of collectible merchandise for their fanatical followers to purchase.
It’s no surprise to learn The King of Rock & Roll, Elvis Presley, still has a dedicated following who amass his memorabilia. However, the recent announcement of this piece of Elvis Presley merchandise going up for auction might shock some: his tomb.
Next month, the private crypt of where Elvis Presley and his mother Gladys were held, will be put under the hammer by an auction company from Beverly Hills.
“In my 20 years in the music business, I’ve seen everything from Beatles bottle openers to Kiss bar stools,” says Shawn, owner of online music merchandise store Planet 13™, “but I’ve never seen a real crypt on offer.”
The actual lot, located in the mausoleum of Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, will have a staggering opening price of USD$100,000. “Because the crypt is attached to his name, it's now considered Elvis Presley merchandise to collectors, so the price will skyrocket past the opening bid,” remarks Shawn, “the thought of being buried where The King once was will be priceless to his followers.”
The Forest Hill Cemetery approached the California-based auctioneers, Julien's Auctions, to put the crypt on the market next month.
Shawn continues, “This is a great example of how something quite ordinary, actually in this case, something most people don’t even want to talk about, can become highly coveted by simply being brushed by fame.”
The crypt itself was only a temporary resting place for Elvis and his mother. They were kept in the mausoleum for approximately 2 months in 1977, while Elvis’s father Vernon awaited the State of Tennessee's permission to bury them at Graceland.
“It’s common for the value of something to increase if it’s connected to celebrity,” says Shawn, “but what’s shocking about the upcoming auction, other than its morbidity and $100,000 opening price, is how little associated it is with Elvis. It goes to show how powerful a famous name, like Elvis Presley, is to the bottom line.”
The temporary crypt of Elvis Presley and his mother will be up for auction on 23 June 2012, at the Forest Hill Cemetary in Memphis, Tennessee USA. Included with the lot are burial services, inscription and use of the chapel.
“Whoever ends up winning this auction should be crowned ‘The King of The King’s Memorabilia,” adds Shawn, “because they’ll be eternally tied to their hero, and paid a fortune to do so.”
