I love this song so much, I love the simplicity of it and the honesty.
It has raw emotions and the simple lyrics make it feel more real to me.
People say that Avrils lyrics are often to simple, but I find them so easy to relate too.
Sometimes with other artists I cant even work out what their songs are about!
Avril tells it like it is, she doesn't over complicate things.
All my friends who don't like Avril love this song so it really is a shame that it flopped.

I don't hink What Doesn't Kill You( Stronger) is generic, it's powerful and with a good message.
WWYH without the pre-chours has no sense, i still don't understand the verses, some words put together to make a sentences, that's the main problem with Avril.

"I Love You" is one of the best songs off the album,
Even though it isn't as unique as complicated or my happy ending,
and sure it needs some EDGE...but
Its a decent ALL-IN-ONE package
-catchy enough to be a single
-Av can show off her vocal powers, esp during the chorus and the bridge.
-it's got a message that most people can relate to.
-a quite mature theme too.
-and imo, the instrumental is amazing!

If WYWH wasn't on the version of GL we got (the delayed version, poorly promoted era), it probably would have smashed. Even if it is poorly written, overproduced, and kind of boring..

The music charts are ever changing, the music tastes are always in flux, things change far too quickly to gain an accurate idea of what people will like next. The reason that "wish you were here" wasn't as popular as her other songs wasn't because it was a pants sog, by standards, it was amazingly written, heartfelt and beautiful, but it wasnt what captivated people at the specific moment it was released. maybe releasing it at a different time might have a greater impact, or a lesser one, it is a game of chance with the music charts and what people want to hear at a specific moment.

It is like when you are picking out songs from albums for a playlist, you are not always going to pick a whole album for the playlist, most albums are diversly made to meet the requirements of the diverse audience, that and experimentation, and playing to strengths.
You pick songs that fit with the other music within the playlist, or what emotions you are feeling at that time, or even what you fancy listening too...

GL failed to make a new trend, Avril is clearly not in her artistic Edge when she made that album, I am not saying its bad, its just her 3 first albums have higher quality, stronger and did stand out .

Example, when LG is released, you won't think that LG will be the album and its songs that people want to hear, considering its RnB, rap dominated time, But guess what, she outsold almost all artist out there.

Same thing with my Happy Ending and TBDT, its not something you will expect people want to here, considering its against the flow.

Okay, I don't mean that i want Avlav to follow trends, I mean that if the majority of people do not buy Av's music then she is not going to 'smash' on the music charts, quite simply, doing your own thing can be a positive thing, or it might not have the highest effect that was planned.

There is an artist that I like, Alana Grace, she has her own style, but it isn't enough for her to be popular enough compared to Avril. Avril is already well known, so this gives her the advantage!

While your point is valid, and most definately correct, I guess new fresh music attracts attention. It certainly caught mine, being a metal head that I was at the time...

So, Avril does not need to follow trends, she doesn't need to release music that fits with the era that we are going through, it is just a gamble whether people will like what they hear or not.

It was barely played on radio, broadcasters ignored it. The clean version that she performed on promotion performances was shit, when she was at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade and she sang the "yeah yeah yeah" version, people were saying on Twitter about how bad her songwriting skills are, at least the "damn damn damn" had a bit more fucking emotion.
"Yeah yeah yeah, what I'd do to have you here, here, here, I wish you were here" doesn't really qualify for a masterpiece chorus. It doesn't even make sense with the "yeah yeah yeah". I do like the song, but it didn't really have the potential to smash. She has far better material.

You also have to remember that the whole album's and its first 2 singles have bad promo, people barely know she have new music! and what happened earlier affected the chance of WYWH to smash. I mean its like its to late! But still WYWH made GL comeback to top 200 BB chart, and it climbed from 500+ to 100 or higher in such a short time.

Proper promo is also needed.

Goodbye Lullaby didn't flop

Goodbye Lullaby gave Avril her third #1 album in Japan and Australia.
It charted within the top 5 in 18 countries (including America)
It reached the top 10 pretty much everywhere else (including the UK).
It was the 17th best-selling album worldwide in 2011.

The last two singles did pretty crap, but they still charted moderately. It wasn't a "shitty phase", it was an album she wanted to put out, and that a majority of the fans enjoy.
