At least LG had some songs about other things, like being yourself, what her childhood was like in Napanee, her changing life, etc. Variety is the key and LG unfortunately is the only album where she displays a balance of fun/serious songs and a variety of topics. UMS has mostly mid tempo angry songs about breakups, TBDT has mostly upbeat songs about breakups, and GL has mostly mid tempos or ballads about her divorce or newfound love. VARIETY VARIETY VARIETY
Yes but every artist writes about break ups and Avril isn't going to be any different, however, Avril is one of those artists that doesn't always focus on love songs. Let Go was about finding your own identity and being true to yourself and so you wouldn't expect Avril to write songs about love in that album because she wouldn't have had that much experience, and yes there was quite a variety of topics. So as she's gotten older she writes more romantic songs because she can relate to those feelings.

Yes in UMS songs like DTM, MHE, TMA and Together are similar but that doens't dominate the album imo. I think songs like Slipped Away and How Does It Feel are about understanding life and overcoming difficult times (Slipped Away) and ultimatley finding our own place in the world. Then there are songs like Who Knows and Freak Out that are about living life to the fullest and not taking anything for granted. So I don't think that the angsty break up songs summed up the album

As for TBDT Avril was pretty "loved up" at that point so I would expect a lot of romance stuff in that album and songs like EBBY and TBDT are all made up stories anyway. I still think that album has variety though with songs like OOTG, Innocence and Runaway but is mainly focused on romance

I think in GL there was the most variety in the sense that she wasn't just blaming the guy for the relationship ending like her previous albums, instead she accepted that these things do happen and it's no one's fault. Also, I think I Love You is quite a unique song and isn't similar to anything she'd written before. Darlin and Everybody hurts are quite multi layered songs I feel, especially Darlin

I think Avril's always going to write about love but she can write songs that are open to interpretaion eg WYWH, IWY, Goodbye (to an extent) and Innocence. But I think it's naive to expect Avril not write love songs, it's where artists get the inspiration for most of their songs. And like I said, all of Avril's contemparies are doing it so it's not like she's the only one to only focus on love too much (which I don't think she does)

Also, she broke up with Brody this year so I'd expect a few songs about him but hopefully she's past the boy bashing stage now

No, I'm not saying she shouldn't write songs about love or that it's all she writes about, but she's going to be 28 by the time this album comes out. There is more to life than just love and breakups. And it gets boring hearing the same thing from her all the time. It shows her creativity as a writer when she can come up with a good story or a song about something in her life besides love or breakups. That's exactly my point- every artist writes about love/breakups all the time, let's hear something different for a change! She doesn't have to write about what everyone else writes about- she can do whatever she wants. One of the main reasons why Complicated was such a huge hit was because it wasn't a typical love song- Britney and others were doing "Baby I love you hit me one more time genie in the bottle" and Avril was singing about it from a different perspective- how people can be two-faced in relationships or friendships. It was more meaningful and really got to the heart of the matter without sugar-coating things and that struck a chord with people. Now it seems like she's recycling the same old ideas over and over again: i.e. WYWH = WYG, ILY = Hot, WTH = Girlfriend, Smile = TBDT (sound-wise), etc. etc. etc.

All those GL songs are the Max Martin productions, pretty curious and interesting. One would think she "recycled" those ideas when she was sent to Max after RCA rejected the "original" GL. For the rest of the album, songs like Not Enough or Remember When have a different point of view about relationship/breakup, which I personally liked Hopefully she will find new ways and also new topics to talk about

All in all, it's been Lavigne's music, not her personal life, that has taken center stage.

That's true and we know she's capable of writing more than just about love break-ups. And I think now that she's older she will have gathered a lot of experience about other aspects of life such as working on her foundation so it would be good if she could draw inspiration from that. Also the fact that she's collaborating with so many people on this album will hopefully help her to explore different areas

We will have to wait and see!

I rather see Avril writing songs about romance and breaks up than her writing songs about going to the club and getting wasted.

In that case, if you compare her to other artist, they all ( including Avril ) lacks of variety

However, Avril have many songs that is not about break ups.

Another thing is, what will make Avril unique is she is one of the few remaining female pop star who don't write mostly about going to club, or some stupid "ghetto" anthem songs.

So even if Avril focused on romanced theme, She is still different than most of her peers.

Plus, songs about romance and relationship is one of the most universal, easy to relate, marketable theme in music ( along with Ghetto theme and clubs songs ). I think regarding that, The general public will going to embrace it, in the end, its bandaids that will be her biggest, most cruel critic, I mean, the public are like, if they love the song/music, they love it, Unlike us, even if we love the music, its not enough for us, as we are going to view it in a microscope.

However, it doesn't mean Avril should only stuck with it. But Avril wrote many songs that is open for interpretation.

''I like the way you misbehave when we get wasted'' She wrote it ahah

Write songs for open interpretations is another thing that she shouldn't do anymore, IMO It's up to the listeners to relate to the songs, Avril should more worry to show and write her emotions, her feelings in a honest way instead of worring to write lyrics just to be open to interpretations!

I'd want something calm such as Paramore's "The Only Exception". It's a love song, cute lyrics and sweet message, and it gives you that calm and overwhelming vibe. It would be awesome if Avril could put out something like that.

Like it or not, even though she's a lot like me, we're not the same.

Wow. I clicked on the thread and just wrote my answer without looking on the last page and when I checked, it's amazing how the topic changed this much.

To the album songs that you guys are talking about.
I'd say I want a break up song, but kinda like something new, mature, serious. Something close to Goodbye but with a stronger structure and more diverse lyrics. I hate comparing to Adele, but to give an example I have to name Set Fire To The Rain. Also, a love song wouldn't hurt at all if it's well and genuinely written. Maybe a song about growing up, or destiny, or... I don't know. Hopefully she'll come with stuff we never even thought about, in a good way.

Like it or not, even though she's a lot like me, we're not the same.

I want a bittersweet song with a pretty upbeat rock sound! Avril's first singles tend to be fun, light and carefree except for the UMS era....wish she'd mix upbeat with a real message and I guess writing with a mature songwriter like Chad would help in that way!
Hoping for a mix of vibes like Pumped up kicks and Black balloon for her new album!!!

"I find shelter in this way...undercover, hide-away" Shelter (Birdy)
