Such cycle of artist quality and creativity is very common, very few of them avoided it,or will going to experience it much later. I think at some point, even great artist like Avril have to experience some creativity/artistic crisis, and according to my music professors, such process is very helpful to revive an artist's fire.

I do agree that a lot of artists lost their own sound but there are still artists who preserve their own style. Some artists reinvented themselves including their music.
