Had an automatic maybe 6 months ago. Loved the car, it was very smooth and chill to drive. Disadvantage is that the car drinks more soup on automatic.

I prefer stick shift, more control and more fun to drive.

Stick if you have a fun car or you're learning, Auto for practicality and long motorway drives.

Agreed. Automatic is easier than stick shift. So when you are learning, you need to learn stick shift. My lazy soul prefer the easier (of course), automatic.

An automatic transmission has a few shift sequences...
    Manuals have infinte.

You can choose to drive just above idling speed and get a very high fuel efficiency, or you could choose to drive close to the redline. Or anything in between.
Automatics don't offer so many options. If you don't understand the difference between driving at different RPMs you shouldn't be driving at all.

And you can use engine braking in manual.

Engine braking is just about the worst thing for your engine

Not really... driving a car from idling to red line (say 0 to 80 in 2nd gear) is worse for the engine than downshifting from 3rd gear to 2nd gear at 80.
As long as you dont end up in the red, it's pretty safe...
Most cars now have blocking mechanisms for that... You cannot downshift to first gear at a speed of 100
