Hey Everyone!

Last week I had an awesome experience visiting Easter Seals Camp Oakes in Big Bear California and I wanted to update you all on my time spent there! My Foundation works with Easter Seals on recreation programs for kids with disabilities through To view the link you have to Register.

So... As we drove 3 hours (!) up a winding mountain road towards the camp, I remembered how much I loved going to camp when I was a kid. Being able to participate in fun activities and make new friends was a great feeling that helped to solidify the vision I had for The Avril Lavigne Foundation. As we approached Camp Oakes, I was excited to learn more about the Easter Seals program there and to relive my own childhood memories.

The Avril Lavigne Foundation supports recreation programs because I believe they provide an opportunity for kids with disabilities to have fun and just be themselves. As soon as we began to walk around the camp, I was happy to see that this is exactly what was happening! People of all ages with disabilities were laughing and hanging out, swimming, singing and dancing.

I got to sit down with some of the campers, including Joy Durkee, Lora Glassman and Danny O'Connor. One of the things they said that really made sense to me was how, when you are at camp you can truly be yourself and having a disability made no difference - it was just about having fun, making new friends, seeing old friends, and learning things like horseback riding. I even took an archery lesson from one of the staff who is going to try out for the next paralympics archery team. That was so rad!!

I was really inspired by the camp staff - they all volunteer and travel from as far away as New York to be with the children at Camp Oakes every summer. Most of these volunteers pay their own way to get to camp and also help campers raise money to be able to attend Camp Oaks. The Avril Lavigne Foundation will continue to work with Easter Seals to identify ways to help support the campers and volunteer staff at Camp Oakes so they can return next summer.

Yeah, I know. But a few years back, for the little updates (like "It's a wrap on the fifth album"), she had to blog about it. And it's her manager who used to do it- so it used to take much more time. Not, thanks to Twitter, she tweets everything out from her phone so it's much quicker and reliable.
