2 Months Later

Misty was growing up quickly; she was a beautiful, chubby, little lady. She was smiling almost all the time and cried only when she was hungry, needed to change a diaper or was unsatisfied with something around her. I was on maternity leave at home with her. It wasn’t easy at the beginning because I had to learn everything, I had to get up at night to feed Misty, I was tired during day and there were time I thought I was a bad mother. But when I saw Misty giggle, when I saw she was happy, I was happy as well.

However, I and Deryck felt the change. We saw each other in the morning and then in the evening when we both dropped dead to bed, so I think the only negative our parenthood brought is that we couldn’t do what we had been doing when we’d been still in school or during the holidays, when we hadn’t known about Misty yet. You know, when Michelle had had a night shift on Friday or Saturday, I’d gone over to Deryck’s house – and told dad I’d been going out with “the guys” or “Michelle” – so we could have sex. The same had been during the summer, but we’d been spending together the whole days, or we’d gone to the swimming pool. We’d preferred the first activity, though. It had always made us feel hot without having to go out of house.

On the other hand, that’s what had caused our current situation.

As for feelings, we were still, after fourteen mothns, crazily in love, and I think Misty just strengthened what was between us. By the way, she starts to laugh whenever she sees me and Deryck kissing, it’s so cute.

However, there was one thing that was bothering me ever since Misty had been born – my dad. We didn’t talk nor did we see each other ever since I had decided to keep the baby. I’d called mum back in March to tell her but I hadn’t contacted dad because…because I’d been scared of his reaction. I wanted him to know I had a girl but I was really afraid what he would say.He’d never supported keeping the baby, plus I’d left home without talking to him about it. Just packed my stuff and went. And he’d called me, of course, trying to get me back home but I had explained that I hadn’t been going anywhere. I’d say it had been hormones ,only it had not.

“You’re his daughter, Avril. He’ll never hate you, parents love their kids no matter what,” Deryck told me, like the most experienced father in the world, for the trillionth time. “Right, Misty?” he kissed her head. She whimpered something like, “hktt”.
“So how come you’ve never seen your father?” I asked, I’ll admit, kind of harshly. I should start thinking about things I want to let out of my mouth. Deryck looked at me, not saying anything. “Sorry.” I apologized. “If he threw me out, I’d know that he doesn’t want me, that I disappointed him. But it’s not like that, I decided to come here, I decided to keep Misty – not that I regret it -, I don’t know what I can expect from him.”

So after at least ten thousand talks with Deryck, I decided to try it. Go home. Home home.

It was a nice May early evening. The sun was still shining and it was warm although it was half pastt six. Misty, wearing a pink “I love my daddy” T-shirt, jeans and sneakers, was sleeping peacefully in a stroller. When I was standing in front of our door, my palms got sweaty and it took me a few minutes to find the courage to ring the bell. But I did it.

A few seconds later my dad opened the door. He seemed surprised to see me – us- there.
“A-Avril?” he went.
I smiled. “Hi,” I said, still feeling a little insecure. Then we just stood there, no one knew what to say. I sighed. “I just wanted to tell you that I and Deryck have a daughter,“ I nodded on the stroller besides me. “And…,” I sighed. “And see you.”
“Come in,” dad invited me. I grabbed the stroller and went inside with Misty.
“What’s her name?” Dad asked, looking at my baby girl.
“Misty. March 8th, “ I told him. “I…uhm, I think we need to talk.”
“I know,” dad answered without looking at me. Misty is such a magical baby – anyone who looks at her cannot take their gaze off of her.

I took her and we went sit down on the couch the living room. It seemed like I’d been there ages ago.

I still had the feeling dad didn’t want to see me at all.
“Look, if you don’t want me here, I can leave. I just thought you may want to see the baby, even though you weren’t much enthusiastic about me keeping her, but I did the right thing and I’m glad I did it.”

If my dad has ever been speechless, it was just then.

“No, don’t go away, I’m glad I can finally see you. I wanted to visit you months ago but I couldn’t find the guts to do it. When you left, I thought you hated me and I knew I was the reason you went away. I was afraid what you’d say if I visited you.”
I increased my eyebrows. “Nice. And I was afraid what you would say.”
“Can I hold her?” he asked, pointing at Misty sleeping in my arms.
“Oh, sure,” I replied.
“And how are you doing?”
“Good,” I went feeling a little more comfortable. It’s pretty weird to feel bad coming home.
“And Deryck?”
I opened a big smile. “Good, too. “
“So, uhm, now that we have talked..are you going to come back?” Dad asked. I had pretty much expected this, I’m just not sure whether dad had expected my answer.
I bit my upper lip, shaking my head, “No. I’m happy like this, and I want Misty to live with both of her parents. Misty’s middle is name is Michelle, after Deryck’s mom. She’s really sweet and she’s done a lot for me.”

I stayed there for an hour or so and we talked about everything. It turned out that dad didn’t hate me at all, and I said I’d visit him more often. He said he’d like to see Deryck sometime as well. That pretty much surprised me and maybe scared me a little bit. But I’ll convince him to come because I want things to be all right. I don’t want to have complicated relationships in my family, especially because of Misty.

When we left, Misty was already woken up and her incredible sweetness caused one cute, and for me also funny, situation.
