Long Beach - May 1st 2003 by nonentity - Try To Shut Me Up Tour

Try To Shut Me Up Tour Review

Concert: Long Beach

Reviewer: nonentity

Date: May 1st 2003

I went with two of my friends. The opening shows weren't all that jazzy. I instantly lost all repsect for Gob when they played the butchered version of "Paint it Black". Simple Plan was better, but they weren't my vein of music.
Then Avril came on and I was happy. The whole band started off behind a black drape, and the drape came down and they launched into "Sk8r Boi". The first few songs it kinda felt like Avril was under the weather or a little teed or something. She was drinking a mug of something (being a vocalist myself, i'd guess throat coat tea - works wonders for vocalists with colds). They did a few songs, then when they did I Don't Give, she seemed to get a little more into it. I totally loved the covers that she did. I was totally singing along when she did Basketcase by Green Day, and even though I don't know all the words, I was enjoying the heck out of the Metallica cover song, Fuel (In between Basketcase and Fuel, she did Losing Grip - I must really say that this is HER song live).
Near the end, she pulled a guy and a girl onstage (along with another guy in an "I <3 Avril" shirt, but I think he was crew, because he had her on his shoulders while she was singing) when she did Complicated. They went offstage after that, and then she came back on with the lead guitarist (Sorry, I'm not good with names - so sue me :/) with acoustic guitars, and they did Tommorow, along with Knocking on Heaven's Door (she did a really good job - her vocals really came through on it). They closed off the set with Things I'll Never Say, an appropriate ending song. All in all, this show was really good. It was my first Avril concert, and my first softer rock kinda concert (My other concerts have been bands like Korn, Tool, A Perfect Circle, etc.), and out of all these shows, I have to say that this one was just the most FUN. Good game, Avril. Hope to see you in town again soon. =)
